Mailbox moves fail to delete source mailbox
Greetings. A client is virtualizing their EXch 2007 SP1 environment and we are moving mailboxes from the physical Srv 2003 Sp1 x86 mailbox to a VM running 2008 x64. Both Exchange installs are 2007 SP1.I've only done moves for safe/test users but in each case the mailbox does get moved to the VM destination but it does not get deleted from the source cleanly. I see 10001 and 1203 errors as referenced in KB 940757. However, that KB is supposed to have been handled by Rollup 5 (pre SP1). I've started the move from both the physical srv and the VM to see if that made any difference. It hasn't.Since I am in an SP1 environment, anyone know why I'd be consistently getting these errors? In each case, I have to move the mailbox back to the source which then fails but deletes the duplicate in the process. Obviously, I don't want to do two moves for each mailbox.Any help would be appreciated.Thanks.

Hello, what is the RU applied in your exchange server? Here are the two things which i would recommend you.SP1 + RU7 & ensure if you moving a mailbox "X" then ensure that user "X" is not using his mailbox until the move process completes.*** You can move the mailbox even though the users are connected and sending & receving email in in E2010 :)***Arun Kumar | MCSE - 2K3 + Messaging | ITIL-F V3

Thanks for the reply Arun. Until this afternoon, the physical server was at RU6 and the virtual had no rollups. I was able to create a new user on the physical, forward some mail to it, and then move that user without issue but existing users in multiple storage groups have not moved/deleted cleanly. I now have the virtual server at RU6 so both Exchange boxes are identical in terms of version - only the OS is different. These users have all been test/dummy users so no one has been in any of the mailboxes at any time.Interestingly, one of the users on Storage Group 4 that I moved did so without any error and they had a 1GB mailbox. All other users - which have come from 3 different storage groups - have all posted the "failed to delete" error and I have to move them back just to get the duplicate to go away. I don't want to go to RU7 on the production box as that would disrupt their live system but putting RU6 on the VM was not an issue since it is not full production yet. Thanks.

Hi, Please understand that the Rollup actually corrects a problem where the Exchange management Console crashes when it finds these mailboxes. The fix for the stub has been pushed out to the next version of Exchange. The rollup was to add an event in log. The only way to solve the issue is to use the workaround listed in the KB article. I suggest you use the method 2 listed in the KB to workaround the issue: Method 2: Set the deleted mailbox retention period to zero (0). For more information about how to configure the deleted mailbox retention period in Exchange 2007, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125047.aspx Mike
