Mails on Exchange 2007 are lost
Hi there,
I've got a very strange problem on a Exchange 2007 SP3 server by one of our customers. At least by one user all E-Mails in the timerange from 23.12.2011 to 01.01.2012 are lost. The user have had used the "Out of Office assistant" for that time. The "funny"
thing is, the lost mails are not in the Recycle bin and also do not show up if the "Restore deleted elements" function is used. but if I use the message tracking on the server I see that the user have recieved mails during that time and they are been delivered
to his mailbox. is anyone there who knows this problem and have a solution for it. System configuration is as follows:
Server:
Windows 2008 R2 Exchange 2007 SP3 (since SP3 supported on Windows 2008 R2)
Additional informations added
Mails will be sent and recived direct over SMTP (server have valid MX record)
POP3 and IMAP Services are not running.
Client:
Windows 7 x64 Enterprise / Windows 7 x86 Enterprise (only if hardware do not support 64bit)
Office 2010 Professional Plus (32 bit)
Thank you in advance.
Daniel

I'll bet you that the user connected from home with the Outlook profile configured with either MAPI or POP to deliver mail to a PST file, and the mail is probably sitting on that machine.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Oh nice out of the box thinking Ed.

I would wish nothing more than it would be so easy, but it is not. Neither the POP3 or IMAP service is running on the server.
Anyway thank you for your reply

Are the messages missing when viewed through OWA?

@Chris Scharff: Yes the messages are missing also through OWA
And I now answer my own question. (I found the right tip on an other forum where a User says: Is there a rule that delete mails driectly?")
The reason for the seemingly lost Mails was a Rule in the "Out of Office Assistent" wich says:
"Move all mails sent directly to me (To: or Cc) to the folder Postfach - [Username]".
This moves the mails out of the Inbox to the top of the mailbox (root folder).
I have created an search folder. And used the Query "find all mails in "Mailbox - [Username]" without subfolders, Recipient is: [own Username or mailaddress]. In the search folder I get a list with the seemingly lost mails with the Headline "Top of Information
store" I have selected all mails and moved them to the Inbox. - problem solved.
That means one more time "The problem is sitting in front of the screen".
Thanks a lot for all answers.

It doesn't have to be. Going back to the beginning of Exchange time, this has been a common configuration error even in the MAPI RPC service, where the user configures delivery of new mail to the PST.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."
