since you didn't say what version of Visio you are using, for v2010
File=>Options=>Advanced (go to the bottom of the panel)=>File Locations... Add it to the list of Template paths
It doesn't really matter as long as you update the template path in the Visio software to point to where you have installed it. aThere is also the official way to distribute a template, might be a bit OTT but I think it should be mentioned.
That method is to use a .msi installer file, this can be created in several ways, Visual Studio, or various other installation programs (I use WarSetup), then used the Visio Solution Publishing Tool to add the Visio information.
