Hi We're running Exchange 2007 SP3 and Exchange 2010 SP1 in co-existence. In 2007, we have Managed Folder Policies that create the following folders for users with the corresponding retention periods Keep 1 Year Keep 2 Years Keep 5 Years The rest of the Inbox is purged after 90 days. But I can't see where this is set on 2010? I've looked at Technet, and it only talks about using the EMS, is this correct, there is no GUI front end to Managed Folders Policies in 2010? Secondly, I have moved a test mailbox over to a 2010 server and the Managed Folder it had for Keep 2 Years has gone. Can anyone tell me : i. What happens to a user's MFP and their Managed Folders when they are moved from 2007 > 2010 ii. How can I check if there is a Managed Folder Policy applied for a 2010 user? iii. If a mailbox was on the Keep 1 Year MFP in 2010 and then when they moved to 2010 this was removed and they had no MFP applied to their mailbox, what happens to the Managed Folder they had in their Outlook and all emails in there?

A: If the MFP was removed (Exchange will not do it, only an Administrator) and there was items in the "Keep 1 Year Folder" then both the top folder "Managed Folder" and the subfolder "Keep 1 Year" will be changed to a normal email folders (compared to System Folder that can´t be deleted). If the folder was empty, it will be removed. And you are right, Managed Folder Policies can only be managed in EMS.Martina Miskovic

The Managed Folder would just appear as a normal folder? And what if the items within it were passed the retention date? Secondly, am I correct in thinking that with 2010, the only way that items can be removed from a mailbox are via a Managed Folder Policy? There is no other housekeeping mechanism?

True -->Exchange will not under any circumstances remove the folders/items. Only the user can do that. The Items in the folder will no longer have a retention date if the policy was removed from the user and will be treated as any other item. In 2010, there are BOTH Retention Policies and Managed Folder Polices? Which one takes precedence? Or can a mailbox only have either a Managed Folder Policy OR a Retention Policy?

I guess both would work cause they use different technologies. I have never tried it, cause that would only be bad configuration. Martina Miskovic

A retention policy is a group of retention tags that can be applied to a mailbox. Managed folders, the MRM technology introduced in Exchange Server 2007, are supported for interoperability. A mailbox that has a managed folder mailbox policy applied can be migrated to use a retention policy. To do so, you must create retention tags that are equivalent to the managed folders linked to the user's managed folder mailbox policy.’ Before you migrate from managed folders to retention policies in your production environment, I recommend that you test the process in a test environment.
