Message Size Limits

As a company we are considering moving our message size limits from 10 mb to 25 mb internally.  We have the storage and architecture to handle this.  I know 10 mb has been the defacto standard for many years now but looking at the office 365 model, their limits are 25 mb so we are using that as somewhat of a model to go by for our on premise design.

Just wanted to get other admins thoughts on message size limits, hear what they have theirs set to and any pitfalls they have run into in regards to going higher.  Thanks.

I would probably just leave it alone.  Unless there is a compelling reason to change it. I honestly don't think email is the proper mechanism to transfer/handle files.  It was really designed as a platform to send messages between parties.  I really don't see a benefit to changing the default size of an attachment internally, there are so many other ways to send that file around.  Most companies I have worked with have some of Document Management System they leverage and can send a link to the whatever they need from there.

Others use a file server to serve up the files.

Externally there are services you can use to control access to files (think of something like Citrix File Share)

Ultimately it's your decision.  But if you do decide to increase these limits it just increases the probability that Exchange throttles itself back some due to back pressure.

25MB should be fine. If its not, you haven't sized your servers correctly.
