Microsoft Excel - cannot save an open file - not enough resources

Hi all

I have a large excel file open and I've been working on it. It then stopped autosaving and I cannot save it any more. The following happens if I try to save it:

1) the 'excel cannot complete this task with available resources....' dialogue box comes up

2) when I click 'ok' then a dialogue box comes up saying that errors were detected and excel may be able to save the file by removing or repairing some features. It offers me to click 'continue' to make repairs in a new file, which I click, choose a different file name and then in the usual 'Save As' dialogue box, clicking 'save' doesn't work - literally nothing happens

I am worried that I have done a lot of work on this file and I face having to lose all of that becuase I cannot save it in any way.

It is a large file (c.100MB), but my laptop is powerful and I've worked with much larger spreadsheets. I'm on windows 8, excel 2007.

One post I read mentioned a limit to the number of formatting settings I can have in a file - could that be causing this? I've tried reducing the number of formats set through the file but that hasn't made an impact

Please help someone - it would be much appreciated

Many thanks

PS - if I try click on the 'Save' or 'Save As' icons, nothing happens - excel kind of ignores it

Many thanks

PPS - I've closed all applications and checked on task manager that only excel is running!
