Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server SMTP Queue building Up
I have exchange 2003 server, my SMTP queue is building up rapidly. I checked for NDR attack but its not an open relay server. In DNS server forwarded lookup zone ip addresses are also present. Only problem I am getting is that.... I am not able to ping or nslookup any external DNS server addressess i.e. google.com, yahoo.com

Have you changed your DNS? Are the DNS server (s) you forward to functioning properly? If they belong to your ISP have you called them?

Do you have a DNS problem? Can you visit web sites like www.google.com or www.yahoo.com using the browser on the server?Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

Yes I can open google and yahoo with internet explorer... and DNS server addresses are just confirmed from ISP, and that is correct. Should I check with giving my mail server public IP in SMTP relay, though local IP is present there?

You mean configure your ISPs SMTP server as a smart host? Well, it can't do any harm, even if it's only for a quick test.Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

Ok.. here is the thing. after right clicking on message in the queue, I click on find messages and all messages seems to be either from only one account or from postmaster. does that refer to anything? Checked with putting public IP but queue is still there.

Do you think it's a stuck message in the SMTP queue? http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/exchange-2000-server/clearing-a-blocked-exchange-smtp-message-queue.aspx

Messages stucks in queue.. thats a good article and I tried deleting the oldest message. But that doesnt seems to work either. checked from www.mxtoolbox.com and my domain isn't blacklisted.

If you send an email to your hotmail or gmail address I'm guessing it doesn't move out of the queue? Have you stopped and started Exchange services to see if that may work?

Have any firewall changes been made? Look at the domain that it is trying to send to and telnet to its mx record on port 25: c:\>telnet mail.example.com 25 Does that return the header information?

Did you resolve the issue? Was it reverse non-delivery report (NDR) attack after all? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909005

Try telnet to any mail server on port 25. You can try godaddy as below: -telnet smtpout.secureserver.net 25 If it does not help escalate issue it with your ISP.

I suggested calling your ISP in the very first post! I've only been on these forums 1 week and it's a joke. Three out of the three threads I looked at this morning people reworded my replies and proposed theirs as the solution. On this thread apparently my assistance wasn't worthy of even a "helpful", other than the fact I said call your ISP and telnet to an external mail server! You so called moderators and MVPs are point grubbers who need to get a life. I had some free time and was only interested in helping, but I see you rewording grubbers have it covered.

Since I'm the only MVP in this thread, I'll assume you're pointing a finger at me (even though I didn't get marked as the answerer). Unfortunately, it just goes with the territory; and you have to accept that if your main aim is to quickly get points, you will be dissapointed. When people close their threads, the last thing they are thinking of is distributing points in an equitable way - they are just glad that their problem is solved. Don't give up after only one week. If you want to help people, keep at it, and try to forget the disappointments that will inevitably come your way. Your efforts will be noticed eventually. If not, at least you'll be rewarded in heaven :-)Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

The MVP and moderator were on the other two threads I checked this morning. Sorry, the frustration wasn't directed at you. Not looking for rewards, just frustrated with grubbers. Thanks

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I've been providing free Exchange peer support for maybe 15 years now, starting when Exchange support was on Compuserve, and definitely long before there was any notion of "points", and before I even knew what an "MVP" was in this particular context. -- Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems." .
