Migrating from Server 2000 to Server 2003
2000 Server is setup with Exchange 2003 running on it. Need to upgrade 2000 server to 2003. Im searching for pitfalls, or should I build a new server and discard the other?

Since there is no real working in-place method of doing this, you have two choices.
1. Export all email to pst, backup all data and reformat the Server with Win2k & Exch2k3 - only viable on very small networks
2. Install another server with Win2k3 (this can be an interim server if you wish to reuse the same hardware)
If you follow Option 2:
Run forestprep and domainprep switches of the Win2k3 Setup on the Win2k DC
Run the Inetorgpersonfix tool on the 2k DC
Install the Win2k3 server (if its an interim box then you could get away with using a PC provided your network isnt very big)
Install AD on the 2k3 Server, run domain prep on the server & Install Exchange
Edit the hosts file on both servers (%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) and add the IP and Name of the other server to each
Move the Exchange mailboxes to the new server and transfer the FSMO roles using ntdsutil to the new server
Let both machines run on the network for long enough so that all outlook clients on the network are automatically redirected to the new server
If you like you can then
Format & Reinstall the Old Server with Win2k3, make it an additional domain controller, install exchange, transfer the fsmo roles and mailboxes and finally, once all outlook clients are updated, decomission the interim server from the network. (This method allows you to reuse the origional harwdware, computername and IP address)
