Mirroring the OS drive on my Exchange 2000 server
I have an Exchange 2000 server running on Windows 2000 Server in a small (<30 people) office. The OS is on a single independent IDE hard drive and the Exchange program files and database are on a RAID-5 array in the same box. Thought I do have nightly backups of everything, it is getting on in age, so I would like to mirror the single IDE (OS) drive in case of hard drive failure so I don't have to deal with the headache of reinstalling Windows 2000 Server and doing a backup restore if it goes south. I have a second IDE drive installed, and I plan on just using the software RAID 1 built into the OS for mirroring, but I do have a question. In order for the drives to mirror, they must both be dynamic disks. The empty drive that I want to mirror to is already dynamic, however my working OS drive is a basic disk. Is it a problem to go ahead and convert it to dynamic? Will it affect the OS or Exchange in any adverse way?

You should be able to convert the existing basic disk to a dynamic disk, but it will require a reboot to complete the conversion.
