In the basic install option there was no mention of the Unified Messaging role that I could see and no offer to install it from the Install screen. It also made no appearance during the system checking process.Might this be because I didn't have some specified hardware on my machine and that there are more hardware checks in Beta 2?I was able to install UM without problem in Beta 1 choosing the same option on the same configuration on the same machine.ThanksAndrew Watt

I have found a workaround.Go to Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs.Select Exchange 2007 Beta 2 and click the Change button.A different interface is displayed that allows installation of the Unified Messaging option.Install went smoothly.Andrew Watt

The UM role is not included in a typical installation, you will need to select Custom installation during setup. To install the UM role on the server afterwards, you could also type below in a CMD Prompt: ExSetup.exe /mode:install /roles:UM /SourceDir:<source directory>

Henrik is correct. The typical install will install Exchange 2007 with the following roles: Hub Transport, Client Access and Mailbox. If you want to install in any different configuration (ie justthe mailbox role, or a cluster, or a Edge transport server, or UM, etc) you will need to select Advanced installation. The only difference between "Typical" and "Advanced" is the Role selection page. "Typical" setup is more geared toward a single box install.

Henrik & Jim, Thanks.Isn't it a little odd that UM isn't part of a "typical" single-box install? It implies, possibly unintentionally, that UM isn't a core part of Exchange 2007. An optional extra, maybe.Since UM was included in Beta 1 in the "typical" install I would be interested in the rationale why it is now considered in some sense atypical.Particularly in the 32-bit build, which is only supported for testing, it makes sense to put all four server roles (other than Edge Transport) in a single-box install. At least it does to me. Am I missing something here?ThanksAndrew Watt
