Monitor Sent folder
Part of the ugly about our jobs as Admins is that we sometimes have to monitor what others are doing. My CIO asked me to just that on an employee that may be leaking company information. I know that I can see his Inbox by going to file-Open-Other Users Folder as I am a Domain Admin, but is it possible to see other folders such as Sent, Saved or anything else? We are running Exchange 2003 and using Outlook 2003. Thx.

You can set up journaling. This will give you the ability to send a copy of each message to a seperate journal mailbox.

Johan is correct that journaling is probably a pretty good option, but maybe overkill for one user.
First, make sure that your CIO asked you IN WRITING (or via e-mail) to monitor a user. In my organization, we actual have to have a signed piece of paper saying it is okay to do so.
For you, you may just want to give yourself rights to access the user's mailbox and then look at their Sent Items or Inbox folders. However, if the user is "on to you", then he/she may delete the messages after they send them. Or, they may just use something like Gmail.
To quote Ed Crowley, Exchange guru and technology curmudgeon, "there are seldom good technological solutions for bad behavior".
If the user continues to use their internal mailbox, then journaling is the right way to go because a copy of the message is sent to the backup mailbox. What I usually recommend is that you create a separate mailbox database for the person (or persons) to be journaled, move them to that mailbox database, then set up journaling.
Of course, this is a bit easier in E2K7.

Thanks for the advise. I am not familiar with Journaling but now I at least know something to look up.
In your second paragraph, you say to give myself rights to the users mailbox. As a domain Admin, I do have rights but I can only see their inbox. Is there something I should do to allow me to see the Sent Box too? Or am I just not looking in the right place?

Hi,
By default, in Exchange 2003, the Domain Admins group is denied to access all mailboxes other than your own (defined from the org level). Thus, whether any changes you have made to access other user mailboxs inbox.
I would like to that you can view others mailbox if you have full mailbox access permission to the mailbox. You can use the following method to view others mailbox:
1. Open Outlook, click Tools and click E-mail Accounts
2. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts and click Next
3. Click the account and click Change, click More settings
4. Under Advanced tab, please add the mailbox you would like to view.
