Hi

I want to monitor MS Exchange 2010 in my environment for those activities/ that might create issues. Can you please tell me what are the services, Hardware & software parameters  that I have to monitor for smooth operation. I have to implement a  solution for complete monitoring of Exchange so any issues will be catered proactively.

Hi,

You can monitor various following matters

1. Test-ServiceHealth cmdlet returns an error for any service required by a configured role when the service is set to start automatically and isn't currently running

2. Monitor for any Critical error, warning in Event Viewer

3. Monitor disk usage periodically

I also suggest you to go for any monitoring solutions like SCOM, Nagios etc.

Have you tried the above suggested steps by ManU Philip which looks good.

Moreover, you may also take help from Exchange Server 2010 Monitoring Management Pack http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=692 which includes scripts and rules to effectively monitor Exchange 2010 and report on performance, availability, and reliability of its server roles.

Additionally, If you wish you may also give try to this application i.e. http://www.lepide.com/lepideauditor/health-monitoring.html a real-time report and health monitoring alert on server availability, CPU usage and stopping of any Exchange Service will instantly inform an Administrator who in turn can fix the issue before its too late.

In addition above suggestion, we could use Exchange server Mailbox Statistics to monitor mailbox database. The tool retrieves mailbox statistics which includes Folder Count, Total Items, Associated Items, Deleted Items, Total Items Size, Deleted Items Size, Oldest Item Date, Newest Item Date, Items Age, Mailbox Age and Quota details. It also includes an additional option named "Archive Statistics Planner" which will let you search mailboxes and provide statistics report with specific dates.
