Moving Mailbox Databases
Hi all, We are running Exchange 2007 on windows 2003 machines. We have 6 storage groups, each with one mailbox database and I need to move them all to a different drive. All of the databases are around 40 GB. My questions are: 1. While in the exchange management console, If I right-click on a storage group I can change the storage group path and if I right-click on a mailbox database I can change the database path. Does changing the path of the storage group move the mailbox database as well? Or do I need to do both? 2. Once I change the database path, does it start to automatically move the database? If so, can users log on while this is happening? And does it take a long time? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

YES for both questions. See the nice article below http://www.howexchangeworks.com/2009/06/moving-storage-group-database-files.htmlVinod

Moving the databases dismounts the stores, so no one will be able to access their mailboxes during the move. How long it takes "depends", but it should be done during off-hours.

Alternatively, if you can create a new SG and DB on your new drive, you can move the mailbox a few at a timeto limit the impact of the disruption, but it is generally still considered best practice to ensure users are not logged into their mailbox during the move.Shaun
