Hi, I am moving mailboxes to a second store because I am running out of space on my first store. I have moved alot of large mailboxes but the space of my first store does not increase. Is there a service that I need to restart for the changes to take effect? Leandro

when you move or delete items from the mailbox database, the free space does not increase automatically. Exchange automatically does the online defragmentation and marks the deleted space as white space. To physically reduce the database, you will have to unmount the database and run the offline defragmentation.

Cannot find the event id, by dismounting the drive I take it it will take the store offline?

Wait a second, are you running Exchange 2010? If yes you won;t see it. You will Event ID 7007. No its exchange 2007 found the event id The database "First Storage Group\First Storage Group" has 57528 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated. If I defrag the drive will the store be unavailable?

what is the size of the databases? For example if you have database of 500 GB than need free space of 550 GB atleast. If you have any drive on the server which is of around that size than you can run it from that drive. If drive G has 550GB of free space than Open EMS and point it to G drive, by default it will be C drive. Once you pointed it to G drive run the defrag. @N_ppy Yes, the store will be unavilable. If you're running out of space, you can either perform the offline defrag, if this fails for whatever reason or you can't get the downtime. Continue to move the mailboxes off that database. Once all moved, delete the database and then recreate it. Then you can move some users back if you wish. Sukh

Sukh As Sukh said, if you don;t have the space than move the mailbox to another database. If you have big database than i wouldn't suggest you to defrag the database as its going to time consuming. Hi Leandro, When you move or delete items form the mailbox database, you only get more free space inside the database, it will not reduce the external size of the database. If you want to reduce the external size of the database, you can follow Gulab and Sukh’ suggestion to achieve the goal. Yes, If your database is big, offline defrag will take long time to complete and you have to dismount database until it complete.
