Moving Server between Administrative Groups - Exchange 2003
Hi,Can be a comman/old question to ask, still would appreciate expert comments. As per MS Documentation --We cannot move servers between Administrative Groups even in native mode.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124621(EXCHG.65).aspxWe cannot move servers between routing groups in mixed mode.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996524(EXCHG.65).aspxIn Exchange 2003 MCSE Training Kit - PHI(70-284), it is written if you have to move servers between routing group when you are in mixed mode, you will have to first move servers in target administrative group and then you can move it to target routing group. But it doesn't say how to do this and there is no option to do this through ESM.However, we were able to move server (Exchange 2003 in mixed mode)between Administrative Groups using AD Sites and Services. It may be something like using ADSIEDIT, but the important thing is that no functionlity is broken after this change (till now). Can somebody comment on this as it is causing confusion.Thanks-V

Real practical scenario below is true. 1. We cannot move servers between Administrative Groups even in native mode. Even in a native Exchange Server 2003 organization, you can't move servers between administrative groups. However, if you're running Exchange in native mode, you can move mailboxes between administrative groups. To work around the inability to move Exchange servers between administrative groups, you can delete the server and recreate it from scratch by performing the following steps: Remove all resources and mailboxes from the server you want to move (in native mode, you can move the mailboxes to another server temporarily or use Exmerge to export the mailboxes). Remove the server from the administrative group (i.e., uninstall Exchange). Rebuild the server and select the new administrative group. If Exchange is in native mode, move the mailboxes from the temporary Exchange server back to the original server. If you used Exmerge, import the mailboxes and re-link them to the Active Directory (AD) accounts. In native mode, you can move servers between routing groups that exist in different administrative groups. In mixed mode, you can only move servers between routing groups in the same administrative group. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125060%28EXCHG.65%29.aspx Moving servers from ADSIEDIT is not supported method and MS donot recommend that. Yes, always use Exchange aware tool (ESM) for this tasks instead of low level AD editor (which doesn't understand what Exchange is)...Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

I have a question related to this.Suppose we have 50 Exchange 2003 Serversin an administrative Group. NowI want 25Exchange Servers 2k3 of them to be managed by one Administrator and rest 25 Exchange Servers 2k3 by another administrator. How can I handle this situation? Because delegating rights on server level or formatting 25 Servers and re-join then in another administrative group doesnt make sense. Thanks -Gangadhar
