Moving existing Exchange 2010 servers to a DR site
Has anyone come across any Best Practises documentation on how to proceed with the following? Currently have one site with 1-CH/HT server and 1- MB server. Need to move both existing servers to a DR site with of course a different subnet. Clients will then conenct to that site through the vpn and externally. MGMT has decided that DR site has higher availability.

If your Goal is just to move one server from Production site to DR site than it shouldn't be a problem. Uninstall that server and move it to DR site. Its as good as introducing the new server on the site. What is your concern? Gulab | MCITP: Exchange 2010-2007 | Skype: Gulab.Mallah | Blog: www.ExchangeRanger.Blogspot.com

Not sure i understand when you say uninstall? but I forgot to mention that i would also like to change the server names to meet the naming conventions we are using based on sites.

I mean to say that if you want to move the server than you will have to uninstall it first like any other server. 1: Remove all the Database Copy of that server. 2: Remove it from the DAG Membership. 3: Make sure that, that server has no mailboxes on it. 4: Uninstall the server from Control Panel. If you get any error post it. Cheers,Gulab | MCITP: Exchange 2010-2007 | Skype: Gulab.Mallah | Blog: www.ExchangeRanger.Blogspot.com

i guess you can just move these servers to new sites and make sure that the dns records are updated accordingly. you may need to change your applications(if any) to use new ip address of the smtps servers. you would also need to make changes sure that ISA/TMG/of any other filewalll if cofigured knows of updated ip address for external user access Thank youDhruv

I know there are many things in Exchange that are AD site specific, so does your statement still hold true?

hi, you can move but your network support team must set subnets, ip addresses, routings etc to your first site. it can be accessible from first site to second site. regards, Mumin CICEK | www.cozumpark.com | Please click Vote As Helpful if it is helpful for you and Propose as Answer!!!

Yes it does. as the Microsoft Exchange System attendent service will detect the site based upon the ip address registeraton on the dns server and update necessary attributes of server object in active directory.Dhruv

Hi nf69, If you want to change the server name, there would be some issue. Per my known, it seems cannot be done. If you want to change the server ip address, you could do it in the new site.
