Moving mailboxes to a new database, question on log files
I need to make a decision keeping available database lun and log lun size in mind. Here are my two options. 1. Move users from database A to database B contained in the same storage group on the same database lun. 2. Move users from database A on lun1 to a new database B on a different lun2. In both scenarios the loglun will NOT change. I have read the following article that explains how move mailbox works in 2003. http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2005/02/15/373021.aspx I also know that they have added some functionality in 2007 for logging and checks and balances. My question is more about the log files during the mailbox moves. What is actually happening? Doeslog files generation increase alot? Or is log file generation suspended completely because of howExchange queues the mail for any mailboxwith the IN_Transit flag set?Would I see more log files depending on whether I choose option 1 or 2 above? Thanks, Chris

Thumb rule is while moving mailbox it generates transaction logs on the destination DB log drive. This applies to both scenarios. Normally it generates the logs equivalent to the size of mailboxes you are moving plus regular mail flow happening at the time of movement. Normal mailflow continuous as it is generating logs. I would definitely suggest you to use different LUN (if you have spare) while moving mailboxes because no use of moving into same DB unless you are just recycling the Exchange DB by moving all mailboxes to another DB.Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com
