Hi all,We're planning to move the Exchange DB and logs to a different SAN but the SAN guys want it to move it via robocopy. I know it's not a good way of doing it but is this possible as long as the drive mapping is the same?I'm sure Exchange is very sensative about drive letters but if the DB and Logs is moved to a different SAN and after provide Exchange the same drive letter will explain still work. Of course Exchange services will need to be stop first.

There are a couple ways to answer your question. It seems that you are going to be using the same exchange server with the same databases. Based on your post I'm going to assume you have a 2003 Exchange server. If that is the case then yes the Exchange server can be the only "owner" of those database and the drive letter doesnt really matter. In ESM you can just browse to the new drive and path of the database and do the same for the log files. Main thing to do is make sure the server is either Powered off or that all the Services are stopped, the Robocopy is just away to move the database and stm files. Just don't want anyone access that database while its trying to be moved. If you give me a little bit more information i can be more specific, but basically the robocopy is ok to move the data as long as users are not accessing it during the move period. I did have another though but it does depend on your san architecture, is there away to present the new LUN to the Exchange server and just use ESM to move the database to the new drive? That is the "Safest" way, but there is always hardware limitation to why you cant attach multiple LUNsn.
