Whenever tried to modify the selected file app get crashes, not able to save in latest version.

if saved on 97-2003 format cells are getting losed.  but no find menu appears to fix the cells issue.

Does this happens to all workbooks, or certain? Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue?

A lot of things can cause Office applications to crash, the most common one is third party add-ins. Therefore, let's first try in safe mode and see if issue persists. This will help to determine whether the issue was caused by any conflicting add-ins:

Press Win + R and type "excel.exe /safe" in the blank box, then press Enter.

Also, please make sure to install any available updates. It's always a good idea to keep current with updates.
