Multiple event ID 7004 please help
Hi all I have an exchange server that repeatedly gets 7004 errors in the event viewer. The description is as follows:
This is an SMTP protocol error log for virtual server ID 1, connection #1116. The remote host "208.180.40.82", responded to the SMTP command "rcpt" with "550 relaying mail to vaxc.cc.monash.edu.au is not allowed ". The full command sent was "RCPT TO:<|01k9d7ydymyoaausg1@vaxc.cc.monash.edu.au> ". This will probably cause the connection to fail.
In each event idthe email address is a different obscure address. Is the server being used to relay spam? If so how do I prevent this?Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,
Which version of Exchange do you use?
For 2003/2000 check below KB and verify & correct the open relay and settings that sends unsolicited commercial e-mail as per KB.

Hi,
For Exchange 2007, please ensure the Anonymous User group does not have ms-Exch-SMTP-Accept-Any-Recipient permission on the Receive Connector which used to receive Internet email.
For relay setting for Exchange 2007, you can refer to following article:

Hello, thanks for helping me. I do use exchange 2003. I have looked through the article but I could not find anything out of order. It is not set to relay mail, and there are no event 1708 in the log. Any ideas?I appreciate your time

Hi,
I think the message only indicated when attempting to telnet to remote host 208.180.40.82 and send email to |01k9d7ydymyoaausg1@vaxc.cc.monash.edu.au, the remote host reject the email as unable to relay the email.
Base on the current situation, I suggest you enable the Message Tracking on the Exchange Server to check where the message is received. Whether it is received from external host or submitted by internal user?
