Multiple exchange servers behind one public I address
I have recently found myself in a position where a client of mine has found himself needing a temporary home for his servers and being that his house is on the market he has asked me to host them for about 2-3 months. His main server is SBS running Exchange 2003 I am running echange server 2003 under SBS in house and have only one IP address through my ISP. I need to know how to configure my exchange server to receive email for his domain and forward it to his exchange server for processing and distribution. He has about 25 users and I don't want to invest in moving them when he is looking to have new office space in 2-3 months. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks

Hi Eli, You can accept mail for his domain using below point. 1: Point MX record of his domain to your SMTP (Exchange 2003) Server 2: Create receipeint policy for his domain as authoritative in your exchange ORG. 3: Create mailbox fof them. I did not get your point "He has about 25 users and I don't want to invest in moving them when he is looking to have new office space in 2-3 months" Below KB is providing complete info got your requirement. My point was that I want to leave his mailboxes on his exchange server rather than relocating them to my server only to have to relocate them back to his in 2-3 months. Appart from not wanting to move his mailboxes, my server does not have the capacity to house his email. My server is an 800mhz Xeon with 2gb ram and no raid. His server is a Dual 3ghz with 4GB ram and raid. Furthermore he is running R2 and has a 35gb database where as I am not so I would be stuck with the 16GB limit.

Hi Ed You can change the database size limit Use this link for it http://www.testlabs.se/blog/2010/01/19/how-to-change-the-database-size-limit-in-exchange-2003-2/Jonas Andersson MCTS: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010 | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010 | MCSE/MCSA Blog: http://www.testlabs.se/blog

Hi Eli, Above gave some good suggestion? If you have no direct connection(internal not through internet) between your exchange server and his exchange server, please follow above solution. Regards! Gavin

His server and my server are on the same physical network. Correct me if I am wrong but I was under the impression that the database size limit could not be expanded beyond 16 GB on SBS 2003 unless you were using R2. The point is mute anyway as I do not have the disk capacity to house his mail boxes. I did find one article on sharing a single SMTP address space among multiple mail/exchange servers. The theory behind it seems to suggest that any addresses that are not resolved by the first server are forwarded to the next server down the line. and potentially o on. The article was a bit vague so I don't know if I interpreted/implemented it correctly or not. The fact that it did not work would suggest I did'nt. In the end I had to direct all smtp traffic to his server, merge my email onto his exchange server and turn off my server. I am still hoping for a sollution that will allow both servers to remain active and authoratative for their separate addrss spaces.

Eli, As you said you don't want to host his mailbox's on your exchnage server, In this situation you can use facility of "Relay Domain" rather than authoritative domain. and can create one connector to relay mail for his SMTP address space. Again here concern is you should have connectivyt betwenn both server. If you use accepted domain as relay then your domain just forward message to his server. Aprt of this i don't see any other solution you can help you.Anil

Hi Eli, You could try this way: your exchange server: server1.A.com; MX record: A.com->xx ; A record: XX->public IP other SBS exchange server: server2.B.com; MXrecord: B.com->xx; A record: xx->public IP 1. force all incoming emails through one exchange server server1.A.com, through MX/A record, receipient policy(add B.com) 2. on your exchange server, please create a new smtp connector, let emails to B.com name space through the connector, and then the emal would achieve the target exchange server Per my known, exchange 2007 is more easily to meet your target through create a new send connector. Please try that, post the result. Your method also be good. Regards! Gavin
