Multiple outgoing send connectors in Exchange 2007
Does anyone know if you can have multiple outgoing send connectors in Exchange 2007 with one connector going to one smtp appliance and the other connector going to a different smtp appliance? Is there a transport rule that can send outgoing email to a specific smtp gateway based on a DL or the content of the FROM field? (i.e. outgoing emails from xyz.com go to smtp gateway 1 and outgoing emails from abc.com go to smtp gateway 2) Thank you, David

1. Yes, you can have multiple send connectors. What you do is that you specify the domains that the send connectors should handle outgoing mail for. So if you have one connector that handles one specific domain, say contoso.com, then you add that instead of * for that send connector. 2. No, you can not forward messages to a specific gateway using transport rules.Martin Sundstrm | Microsoft Certified Trainer | MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator 2007/2010 | http://msundis.wordpress.com

Thanks Martin for the response. Do you see any issues with the following scenario? Two smtp gateways for an Exchange organization, gateway 1 and gateway 2. Division abc.com's incoming email comes through gateway 1 and xyz's incoming email comes through gateway 2 via MX record configurations. Since Exchange transport rules cannot split the outgoing emails to the two gateways on the way out based on which one the email came in on, all outgoing emails go out through gateway 2. We will basically have 2 divisions on the same Exchange organization that will want to continue to use the smtp appliance they are used to using. Thanks again. David

That sound like an ok scenario, there isn't really any other way of doing it if you want to use different smtp gateways for each domain. The only thing that can be an issue is revers DNS lookups, that can be avoided by adding PTR records for the domains.Martin Sundstrm | Microsoft Certified Trainer | MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator 2007/2010 | http://msundis.wordpress.com
