Need to blacklist an internal user
We have an employee who has been spamming some of our internal distribution lists. How can we block a single user from being able to see/use the distribution lists? We are using Exchange 2007. Thanks.

There is a setting on DL's that you can restrict who can send to the DL.You can restrict who can send to the DL or who is not allowed, there is also a checkbox for authenticated users submission, I suggest that you mark this checkbox to be protected by mail coming in from Internet and anonymous connections. From EMC, Properties on the DL, Mail flow settings tab,Message Delivery Restrictions.lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

Lasse's answer is correct and that is what I would do. But this is a Human Resources issue more than a technical one. There are seldom good technological solutions to bad behavior. (quoting Ed Crowley)Jim McBee - Blog - http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com

Hi, Yes, I agree with Jim, technical way is not the best solution. Educate the user is more efficient. Additionally, you could use command: set-mailbox recipientlimits switch to specify the maximum number per mail to which this mailbox can send. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123981.aspx Thanks, Elvis

Thank you, Karl, youre right. In Exchange 2003, the recipients restriction is enforced after expanding DL, a DL with 10 users isconsidered as 10 recipients. In Exchange 2007, the process is before DL has been expended, so a DL is considered as one recipient. Kelly, in this case, please educate the user before technical restriction. Regards, Elvis

We have attempted to "educate" the user. Twice. Hence our need for a technical solution.

If you insist on using a technical solution to what is an HR issue, do this: Get-DistributionGroup |Set-DistributionGroup -RejectMessagesFrom <user> Personally, I'd disable his mailbox, and have him and his manager sign an e-mail policy before re-enabling the mailbox, and then if it happens again, refer him (again) to HR for termination. But, I'm mean that way ;)Karl
