New User Account - Legacy Mailbox
Environment 1 - Exch2007 server with Hub, Mailbox and CAS role 1 - Exch2007 server with CAS role only Recently transitioned from Exch2003 to Exch2007. Decommissioned Exch2003 following instructions found here --> http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb288905.aspx Issue When we use ADUC to create a new user account and mailbox. The new mailbox shows up in the Exchange Management Console, in the "Recipient Type Details" as being a "Legacy Mailbox" and also the "Primary SMTP Address" column shows blank. Also, the user is not able to connect to their mailbox from Outlook. Work Around I have 3 Database storage groups and have found that if I "Move" the mailbox from one storage group to another and then back again, the mailbox has all the right attributes and mail flow works. Resolution I would like to know what is causing this and how to prevent it from happening and if it's a symptom of some larger issue.

don't use ADUC to create exch 07 users, use EMS or EMC, if you do create in ADUC, you dont' have to movethe userto fix, just a Set-Mailbox username -ApplyMandatoryProperties

To create/manage Exchange 2007 users you need to use either Exchange Management Console or Exchange Management Shell which applies some of the additional properties for Exchange 2007 which Active Directory Users & Computer can not. For existing users you can run Set-Mailbox with ApplyMandatoryProperties switch to convert from legacy to mailboxuser and apply Exchange 2007 mandatory properties. Here are some of the references.. Using the Exchange Management Console Using the Exchange Management Shell How to Create a Mailbox for a New User A mailbox that is located on an Exchange Server 2007 server may be identified as a legacy mailbox in Exchange Server 2007

Thanks for your help. So are you saying that using ADUC will no longer work to create both the user account and mailbox at the same time? That it needs to be a two step process? Just to be sure I have it straight, I can use ADUC to create a new user account and mailbox using the wizard, but then I'll need to run the Set-Mailbox username -ApplyMandatoryProperties cmdlet? Otherwise I'll need to uncheck the "Create an Exchange mailbox" box and then go into EMC or EMS and create the mailbox? Thanks again for your help.

Right, it should be a 2 step process, 1 with ADUC, 1 with exchange management shell or console. The -applymandatoryproperties is a workaround, but i haven't seen any issues with it...i'm sure it is not considered a best practice. john

So instead of using the -applymandatoryproperties, would the preferred method be to just use the EMS to create the mailbox? What would the command be to do that? If you don't know I can look it up. Thanks.
