No e-mail headers on outgoing mail
We have Exchange 2003 with Outlook 2007 clients. We are having some problems gettiing mail to what seems to be particular outside e-mail recipients (sending to 5 recipients at 3 different domains). The sender is getting 4.4.7 deayed and failed messages. I am trying to pin down if it is those particular addresses that are the problem, the sending account or other issue. What I wanted to do was look at the outgoing mail headers in Outlook. But I only see headers for incoming mail ... outgoing mail headers are blank in Outllook. Is that a server setting blanking the headers?

If you're refeering to sent items, you wont see them. Message have been submitted, i.e just left your sent items, there wont be any headers. Sukh

Enable SMTP Protocol logging instead: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124469(EXCHG.65).aspx

Hi Chris, Any update for your issue? As above refered, your issue is expected. If you want to troubleshoot the issue, please post the ndr here, and retrieve some information from the smtp log. Did you check the queue, and or did you use the tracking message tool buil-in. Regards! I haven't found the cause as of yet. Problem seems to be intermittent. There is nothing stuck in the queue. The last entry on Message Tracking shows the message was transferred to all 3 mail servers. The original messages were to 5 recipients on 3 different servers. I enabled SMTP Protocol logging yesterday. Nothing relevant reported in the logs so far. It could be that only one or two of the recipients are having issues. We are going to send individual e-mails to each and check who gets them and who doesn't. The reason I was asking about outgoing mail headers was because 2 of the recipients use Google Mail. Google insist they need the outgoing mail header information before they will even look at the issue. I explained to Google that Outlook does not show any outgoing headers only incoming headers. They insist that it does and will not do anything until I produce them.

They are probably referring to the SMTP log information showing that your servers sucessfully delivered the messages ( Or not) to their servers.

I asked them for instructions to retrieve the headers. They gave instructions to open the sent mail in Outlook and copy the header information. So again told them there are no headers for sent mail. They insist there are. They didn't ask for anything from the server logs etc.

What instructions did they give you to get the headers for the sent email? I would send them a screenshot if your sent mail showing no header info. Get the headers from them, that way you can see at what hop the delay occurred at from the timestamps, could be isp, 3rd party filtering services etc.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Ask them if they have ever used Outlook with Exchange before. :P The SMTP logs are the only way to see what is going on here in this case since the recipient apparently never got the message.

I think they know there are no headers. It is just their way of fending me off so they do not need to do anything. We sent individual mail to each recipient. All went through with no failures. I think all we can do is continue to send individual mail to those recipients in the future. Then if any fail I can isolate which recipient(s) and check the logs. Until then I do not think there is much I can do.
