Nonpaged Pool is over the warning threshold
Our exchange server 5.5 stops working after a week or so. Every week. Last outage I have run the ExBPA tool and I got this error: Nonpaged pool memory on server is over the warning threshold of 100Mb I have implemented the suggestions of this MS KB: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996269.aspx But still get the error when I run the ExBPA after the server crashes. The only remain problem the ExBPA shown is a network card driver upgrade. But I don't see why this new driver would change the way this Nonpaged pool memory is handled.

The network card driver version is irrelevant. You don't say anything else about the server though that would assist with diagnosis. How much RAM does it have. What OS is it running. How many users are on Exchange. How big is the information store.etc. etc.I hesitate to even dive down this hole much. Really. Why is it even worth your time to debug a 10 year old version of the software? In less time and for less money you could install a current version and be done with it.

I hope you are aware of this Extended life-cycle support for Exchange Server 5.5 originally concluded on December 31, 2005 but has been adjusted to end January 10, 2006 Have you set the /3GB switch in OS? The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Win32_PerfRawData_PerfOS_Memory Microsoft Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) class to determine the current value for the PoolNonpagedBytes key. The actions taken by the Exchange Server Analyzer depends on the underlying operating system, the presence or absence of the /3GB switch in the Windows Boot.ini file, and the discovered value for this key. The following table displays the matrix of evaluations used by the Exchange Server Analyzer to determine whether this value is out-of-bounds for a specified Exchange server. If the conditions in the following table are matched, a warning is displayed. Operating System Boot.ini Setting Current Non-Paged Pool is Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server /3GB 100 MB or more Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server None 200 MB or more Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003 /3GB 100 MB or more Microsoft Windows Server 2003 None 200 MB or more Also upgrading the NIC card is just a recommendation in order to avoid any kind of bottlenecking for clients. it is always best practise to make sure all pheripheral are running on latest driversVinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

Thanks for your answers and questions. Here are some more info about this server: - Exchange is 6.5 (not 5.5) Build 7638.2 SP2 - Runs on a Windows 2003 R2 Standard SP2 (HP ProLiant ML350 G5) with 8 x Xeon CPU @2.66 with 3.5GB Ram - Exchange has 36 users and Database is around 21GB Here is what has been added to this server in order to help solve this problem (and optimize memory usage): - add the /3GB /USERVA=3030 switch in the server boot.ini file. - set the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\SystemPages 'SystemPages' value of 31000 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/aa996786.aspx - set the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager 'HeapDeCommitFreeBlockThreshold' REG_WORD value of 0x00040000 (40000 HEX) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/815372/en-us Regarding answers to your questions: How many I/Os are backed up waiting for termination? - How can I find out ? Are they running Anti-Virus software on the server? - Yes Kaspersky AV Any other 3rd-party software? - Nope, only MS Running PoolMon - I am monitoring the memory usage every 30min for the past hours.- To monitor the non-paged pool and make sure that it is not climbing above the threshold of the system, what should I look at into poolmon once I have enought data? This morning I had the error again:Nonpaged pool memory on server xxxxx.xxxxxx.local is over the warning threshold of 100 MB. This may cause system instability. Current value: 99 MB. ** Also I have to say that the exchange connector in IIS 6.0 (Webmail) is going up and down for 15min to 30min many times a day. -- I believe this IIS is not correctly configured - but this is another problem for me to solve -

if store.exe is 7638.2 build, you are still running an older version of E2K3, upgrade to the latest version by putting all patches on E2K3 and this could resolve the issue for you.

My Server looks stable and user have not complain since yesterday maintenance updates. Just a shame that Microsoft does not provide a way to get these updates using Windows Updates. These never came up. Had to seach and get them by hand. Thanks again for the suggestion.
