OAB creation issue on server
I was wondering if someone could further assist me with this problem. We did a transition from Exchange 2003 to 2007 back in August 2009 and whilst our OWA users are able to see the global address list our users who use Outlook client on their desktops (Outlook 2010) who have cached mode enabled are not able to see the downloaded OAB. In fact no OAB exists on the server. On the Exchange server under Exchange server, clientsAccess, OAB. It is completly empty. We have tested, if we turn off Cached mode on the client, the address book works because obviouslly its not using the OAB anymore and more likely the GAL. When we look on the Exchange Server we have the following logs: OALGen failed to read the objectGuid attribute from offline address book (OAB) object '/o=************/cn=addrlists/cn=oabs/cn=Default Offline Address Book' in Active Direcotry. Please check security settings on this object. OAB generation will not be performed. OALGen encountered error ffffffff while initializing the offline address list generation process. No offline address lists have been generated. Please check the event log for more information. - /o=**********/cn=addrlists/cn=oabs/cn=Default Offline Address Book All I want to do is recreate the folders in this OAB because I think that will resolve the issue. I can also confirm our AD is also fine. We have 2 X 2008 Domain controllers and have ran DCDIAG and it has passed all tests. Can anyone help?

Hello Ranjb I'm thinking there was a problem with your address list. What happen if you try to update your GAL (Check Eventlog)? Maybe you must enable the Export-Loglevels for OAL-Generator. You can do that with in your Powershell: 'set-eventloglevel-identity "MSExchangeSA\OAL Generator" -level expert'. After you've set the loglevel to expert try to update your GAL again. If there any warnings or errory, please post it here.

On the Exchange server under Exchange server, clientsAccess, OAB. It is completly empty. What about "Organization Configuration | Mailbox | Offline Address Book"? Is the "Default Offline Address Book" there? Is the Default OAB enabled for web-based distribution? Does the OAB virtual directory on your CAS server(s) appear in the list? >We have tested, if we turn off Cached mode on the client, the address book works because obviouslly its not using the OAB anymore and more likely the GAL. > >When we look on the Exchange Server we have the following logs: > >OALGen failed to read the objectGuid attribute from offline address book (OAB) object '/o=************/cn=addrlists/cn=oabs/cn=Default Offline Address Book' in Active Direcotry. Try creating a new OAB named "Default Offline Address Book". Do you have a public folder database? Does it contain the system folders for the OAB? --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Hi, Based on the error you received, I suggest you check the permission of the Default Offline Address Book by using ADSI Edit tool. You can refer to the below article to reset the permission: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dgoldman/archive/2007/05/16/missing-permissions-on-the-address-lists-container-breaks-the-oab-generation-process.aspx Thanks AlleAllen Song

What about "Organization Configuration | Mailbox | Offline Address Book"? Is the "Default Offline Address Book" there? Yes in the offline address book section, the defaut offline address book is listed. If i go to properties it says the generation server is the name of our exchange server and runs an update schedule daily at 4am. In the address lists section, it has ticks for 'include the default global address list' and also a tick for 'include the following address lists'. In the address lists there is a path called \staff which is all the users who use Outlook which is the users we want to be included in the OAB. Do you have a public folder database? Does it contain the system folders for the OAB? --- Yes we have a public folder database which was also migrated from 2003 to 2007.

All you needed to do was add the new Exchange 2007 server to the replicas list. Before going any further, have you run oabinteg to see what it tells you? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907792 http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/oabinteg http://www.msexchange.org/articles/Offline-Address-Book-Integrity-OABInteg-Utility-Explained.html --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
