OS Storage location for Exchange 07 in Hyper V Environment
Hi,I am in the process of installing Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2008 with Hyper V SCCenvironment and I would like to know the following:Where is the best place tostore the virtual machineguest OS (Windows Server 2008) when taking speed and SCCredundancy in to consideration? On my iSCSI SAN or on the local physical machine's disk. This virtual machine is intended to be the Exchange 2007 mailbox role.I believe both are supported as long as the OS and DatabaseVHD's are on seperate spindles?.Many Thanks in advance

I will recommend to keep the Guest VHD's on the local machines and the Database on the SAN.Raj

Thanks foryour quick reply, Would the Guest VHD's need to be in seperate partitions on the local machine?

Agree with Rajnish. Yet, it would be better if you put the guest OS VHD into the SAN, which will increase the speed, well, unless you have RAID 6 or10 on the local machine More resources: Microsoft Support Policies and Recommendations for Exchange Servers in Hardware Virtualization Environments Exchange Server 2007 and Hyper-VJames Luo TechNet Subscriber Support (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/ms788697.aspx) If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com

James, Thanks for the feedback, however you say it's better to put the guest OS VHD on the SAN and Rajnish is saying to put it on the local machine, so it doesn't look to me that you agree with Rajnish?I have read the links you attached previously and am still unsure?I have RAID 1 on the local machine. Why will the speed be increased if I store the OS on the SAN rather than the local machine? Thanks

O. Im agreeing with the Database on the SAN part. RAID 1 mirrors the disk, which the speed shall same as one disk. Per my knowledge, SAN is fast than it. However, as Im not a storage expert, please consult the storage vendor or manufacture for more details James Luo TechNet Subscriber Support (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/ms788697.aspx) If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com
