OWA users prompted for repeated login credentials
I am running Ex 2003 Sp2 and recently have had a problem with OWA clients in IE being prompted for login credentials after intial login both offsite and internal users are prompted several times again after starting OWA in IE. If users simply close credentials prompt without filling in info it does not effect access to email messages. This applies only to OWA in IE, in OWA Firefox no problems. Safari users have reported. Outlook client users have no problems.Noticed in Exchange server event log 1024 events: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM was unable to log on as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM to the Public Folder Store "First Storage Group\Public Folder StoreAs far as I know no system changes have been made. No other event errors reported.Ideas?Peter

It's the IIS virtual directory permissions. you could have the default realm defined for /exchange but not /public. if thats not it, check th ensure the authentication types are uniform.

You can check all your permission settings against this: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Resetting-OWA-Folder-IIS-security-permissions-Exchange-2003.html

Thanks that was very informative. I did everything but delete and rebuild it. Which I will do when during non-work hours. I hope it is as easy as the author indicates.I did notice however, that when I restart the Exchange Info Store service the pop-up behavior stops. For how long it stops I'm not quite sure yet since I just discovered it. ideas on this?i appreciate your help

That's a doozy; I'd say rebuild OWA and if it still happens you've got store permissions issues. Have you run ExBPA? it'll tell you if you've got non standard permissions set on your stores. If the above post/link ends up solving your issue, please mark it as such to help others looking for answers :-) Thanks!

I've seen that article and I'm not sure what a blank DB is or why I would suddenly have one.

Yes I ran ExBPA and the report was meaningless to me in permissions dept. It gave me a lot of domain info but nothing I could understand with respect to permissions.

Do you have any databases that do not contain mailboxes? So a blank one all the sudden would be if you created a new one and didn't put any mailboxes in it. On ExBPA were the permissions things informational or warnings/errors? If warnings/errors, can you post them?

I get this kind of info that appears to have no erros or warnings unless I'm missing something:http://vashonsd.org/images/exbpa.jpg

But nothing in yellow or red on the base part of the report right?

I'm running a "permissions" scan only, correct? The only thing I see in the report is this tree view of AD scheme and the like. It is nothing like the erports of the other scans which give specfic info and options.

run a health check and look for permissions issues. Any non-default store permissions will kick warnings or errors on a health check.

I don't see anything unusal related to permissions. There are some issues noted.http://vashonsd.org/images/exbpa2.jpg

None of those items would be causing your trouble. Good luck with the OWA site rebuild!

When I came in this morning and tested OWA in IE no pop-ups, so it is almost 24 hrs with no problem behavior. It appears to be permission issue. I did not have Authenticated users added to permissions on Exchange Virtual directory and the actual Mailstore. Not sure why in over two years of service that this has never been a problem before, perhaps an MS update or patch caused it to appear. I should note that I made the permission changes but they only went into effect after I restarted the EX Store Service... a critical step that was not mentioned it the info link earlier in this thread. So, I did not need to rebuild. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.Peter
