This is really driving me insane. I use SharePoint Workspaces 2010 for offline caching of my work Sharepoint sites. Past few days my company's SharePoint server has been down, and I noticed that ever since the server went down the OfficeFileCache folder just GROWS uncontrollably taking up every available space on my harddisk until at one point my disk was completely full (0 space available!), which meant I could not do anything. 

I managed to clear a few GB but then MSOSYNC.exe started ballooning the OfficeFileCache again until I managed to kill the process via Task Manager. Unfortunately by that time I am not down to less than 50MB of free disk space. This even happens if I am disconnected from the Internet. 

How do I free up all this excess space?? I don't want to delete the OfficeFileCache folder because, I still need access to my files until the SharePoint server is up again, but I can't keep running with only 50MB of free space.

On top of that once I killed MSOSYNC.exe I can't put new files into SharePoint Workspaces, which begates the whole purpose of working offline.

Hi,

You can try to free up space by discarding documents in document libraries. When you discard a document, you will still see its filename (the document header), but the document content will no longer be available in the workspace. You can continue to work with the document by opening it in a Web browser. You can also download the document again in the workspace.

 NOTE    Discarding a document is different from deleting a document. When you delete a document in a SharePoint workspace, this action will also delete the document on the server.

1. Select the document you want to discard.
2. On the Home tab, click Download Contents, and then click Discard Local Copy.

You can rename the OfficeFileCache folder if unexpected problems occurs with the OfficeFileCache folder:

Warning    All changes to cache files that are pending upload to a web server will be lost if you manually rename the cache.              Rename Cache folder may affect you access the files.

Follow these steps to manually rename your file:

1. Close all Office programs.
2. Click the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys to open the Task Manager.
3. On the Processes tab, select MSOSYNC.EXE, click End Process, and then close the Task Manager.
4. Navigate to %userprofile% \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\14.0\.
5. Rename the OfficeFileCache folder.(You can change folder name to OfficeFileCacheOLD)

Doesn't really solve my problem. I don't want to discard local cache copies because the SharePoint server is down, if i discarded local copies or deleted/renamed cache I'd lose all my local copies and will not have any files accessible until the server is up. Furthermore, if for some reason data is not recovered when the server comes up, I want to ensure i still have my local cache to recover documents. 

Now I have another issue, i can't open files cached in SharePoint workspace anymore. 

When i double click on the file to open it from Sharepoint Workspace, I either get a "Could not open http://..." (for Microsoft office files) or "invalid file" error with PDF

Note that the file is listed as cached/downloaded

When i try to copy and paste the file to another folder, i end up with a file with 0 size

Seems like my cache is corrupted, but I still see a massive .FSD file (>10GB). Is there any way to extract/restore documents from the .FSD file?

You are right, if discard document or rename OfficeFileCache folder, you cannot access the document any more.

Please do not rename the OfficeFileCache folder if you have document change,  All changes to cache files that are pending upload to a web server will be lost if you manually rename the cache.

After that, you can rename the OfficeFileCache folder to resolve the folder size growing uncontrollably, hope this helps.

I am looking how to restore document from .FSD file, I'm not sure it has other way except the SharePoint Server comes up again.

Quick update, the SharePoint site finally came back up, but unfortunately our operations messed up the backups and were only able to restore a backup from 2 months ago, which means my changes and new docs from the last 2 months are only sitting in my OfficeFileCache

Unfortunately I still can't extract the files. I have avoided sync-ing back sits to the server because when I tried it for one site it cleared my local cache and redownloaded the (old) files from the server (instead of uploading the changes from my local cache like I was hoping)

If you could find any way to extract files from the local cache .FSD file that would be great as that is the only place I have my last 2 months changes.

I do not know of any way to restore from the local .fsd file. Can you tell me what type of files these are? I am looking to see if there is another way for these to be restored.

This is absolutely ridiculous!  I'm about ready to reformat and reinstall.  Microsoft needs a "real" fix for this now.  Items in triplicate is not the point of OneDrive for Business.  Why on earth do I need them stored locally and in a cache if it is SUPPOSED to be in the cloud.  Which I might add is the really the whole point of the cloud, to be accessible anywhere WITHOUT cluttering up my OS partition with an extra 40GB of data that is virtually stale.  This is a step backward.

I could not agree more.  Microsoft of Business is a good idea but i am spending way too many hours a week trying to work around all these quirks.  Hours a week for the owner of a small company is not productive.  Do I have to by 1TB SS hard drives now just for the pleasure of using Sharepoint? WTF?
