Office 2013 & 2016 Credentials issue

I am having a problem with when using the correct credentials that work in Windows live mail, and in a web browser for the same account the server (or Outlook) rejects the username and password as incorrect.

I have tried the auto setup, and setting it up (*** Email address is removed for privacy ***) using POP.  Both are rejected in Outlook.

I am using the same user name and password in WLM & Web based successfully.

I am able to add all my other POP & IMAP emails with no problem but with the @live.com  It fails every time

The same issue presented in Office 2013 so just to make sure it was not an OS issue (win 10 Build 10166) I did a clean install of the OS did not install 2013 and tried 2016.

I have also checked the credentials for all accounts in the OS and they appear correct.

I would hate to not be able to use Office (either 2013 or 2016) because I cannot get this to work.

Any ideas Wizards??

Hi,

As this issue is only with the @live.com account, this makes me suspect it's related to the security mechanism of the account. You can read this:

About two-step verification

Your issue may be caused if you have turned on the two-step verification, you will need to get an app password for Outlook login:

  1. Go to the Security settings page, and sign in with your Microsoft account.

  2. Under App passwords, click Create a new app password. The new, unique app password will appear on your screen.

  3. In the app or device youre trying to use, enter that new app password instead of your regular password.

I hope it's helpful to you.

If the issue persists, you can also try some other methods like "change a password".
