Office 2016 for Mac won't stop crashing

I bought Office 16 with the assumption that it would work.  It doesn't.  Every time it is opened, it will last for about a minute and then crash.  I have tried every fix that the internet has to offer so far, and nothing seems to work.  After spending hours scouring forums I decided to post the same problem that everyone else had been posting myself, and didn't get any better luck than the other hundreds (or more) people that are experiencing the same problem that I am.  Now because the people at the "Office 365 community" have given up on me and can't find any solution that helps in the slightest, they have directed me here.  They told me to copy and paste the detail log of my error message but it makes this message too long, so whoever feels like they might be able to helps, I can email it or do something else with it....

If there is no solution I would like to get my money back because I spent it on a product that doesn't work.

Thanks

I also have this issue. I've done everything: safe mode reboot, repair permissions, verify/repair fonts (all were OK, by the way), reset Keychain, deleted Normal.dotm, removed all templates, removed all add-ins, removed all macros, uninstalled fully/reinstalled Office. I use primarily Word 2016 for Mac and not the other apps in the Office suite, but Word 2016 for Mac is unusable--it crashes after ca. 1 minute after launching no matter the context, no matter the activity. I have been using Word 2016 for Mac since it was in beta, and it's never had this level of instability. Right now, it's essentially an unusable product. This problem also seems to be widespread judging by similar posts in various Microsoft forums. (A couple of days ago, Word was also not signing in properly to Office 365, although I am no longer seeing that problem--not sure if it could be related or not.) The problem has been around for ca. 1-2 weeks.

It would be great to get the developer onto an assessment of the cause(s) and get a fix out, because the product is not usable as it is.

Hi,
We have definitely heard your frustration, and we're thinking about ways to make this scenario work better for our customers. Do you mind sharing us more information about your issue?

  • Was Office 2016 for mac crashed/hanged with every Office suits? Word, Excel and so on.
  • Did you get some error messages like this: Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience?
  • Which steps you have tried to fix this issue?

Then, please try the following steps:

1. Create a new user profile/new user account on a machine to do the steps.

On the Apple menu, click System Preferences.

If some settings are unavailable, click the lock icon, and then type an administrator name and password.

Click Add (+), and then type the user's name.

Type a short name if you do not want to use the short name that is automatically generated.

Type the user's password in the Password and Verify boxes.

Click Limitations, and then give that user permission to administer the computer.

Log off from the current account.

Log on to the new user account.

Start the Office for Mac program, and then try to reproduce the issue again to see if the issue has been resolved.

2. Within the new profile, please repair your Disk Permissions and also Verify them.

3. After this is complete, please do a full uninstall of Office via this KB:

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Uninstall-Office-2016-for-Mac-eefa1199-5b58-43af-8a3d-b73dc1a8cae3?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US&fromAR=1

4. Once the uninstall process is complete, please install Office 2016 without any customizations or added features

a. This includes Fonts, Add-ins, etc.

b. We want the test environment to not contain any customizations - This goes for other apps as well (i.e. Safari)

5. Test running the new install of Office.

If this issue still exists, please send us the crash log via email (ibsofc@microsoft.com), I'd like to do further troubleshooting.

Regards,

George Zhao
