We have Office 2013 in different forms in our organization. Since it hasnt been decided which way to go, some tests have done installing it via https://portal.office.com, we also provided Office 2013 via the ODT (Office Deployment Tool) in App-V format. However personally Id like to get rid of this App-V (since it causes headaches when changing anything in a connection group for Office with its plugins-) and deploy it full blown as an application (setup.exe / ).

Now I wonder how this goes license-wise: Office 365 is a subscription bought per user per month, the App-V is via KMS I presume and so is the full blown install?

So I guess we should see those Office 365 subscriptions as a total separate thing from our Volume license thing(?). We should however still be able to plugin in the Office cloud with our Office 2013, that will work right?

I know there is a lot of info on these licenses but cant figure it out there.

For the App-V approach (use ODT setup.exe), you can configure as either VL (KMS, MAK or ADBA), or, SL (O365):

For the MSI approach (use OCT setup.exe), it is VL:

You can use Office2013 (VL) to connect to O365 cloud services.
Both VL and SL, require you to authenticate to the O365 cloud services tenant, to access the online services.
There are many different options for the identity provisioning and sign-in to the O365 tenant (Azure AD)..

Thanks! So Office 365 licenses are spilled money in our case, right? Unless we would (one day) want to use Office 365 Office online with our Office 2013 local installed pc's. What would need to happen then?
All those who want to connect need an Office 365 account and then still can use their locally installed Office (or App-v)?

O365 is available in many different ways, you can purchase only online services, where you could use your existing Office client software on computers to connect to the online services.

Or you could get an O365 plan which includes Office365ProPlus (C2R).

It seems a waste of money to do both - why pay for Office client software twice?

If you already have invested in Office VL, you have the choice. If you have only invested in O365 SL, then you don't have the rights to Office VL ?
