Orphaned Public Folder?
We have recently migrated to Exchange 2007 completely and have no 2003 servers left in our environment. It has just now been brought to my attention that there is a public folder that shows in Outlook but not on the Exchange server. Any insight into how to fix this issue would be appreciated.

What's the current requirement of PF, do you still requires it?
Exchange 2007 doesn't have Public folder database created by default, if you have selected "No" in an option "Do you have any client computer running Oultook 2003 or earlier in your organization?" of Exchange 2007 installation...

If that pf was located on EX2003 and ex2003 is no longer available in that case if you need to recover that PF then you need to build out a test ex2003 server with same ORG AG name and Storage Group name and restore the PF database backup and exmerge the PF using Outlook.

We have created a pf store on our 2007 servers and we do have clients still running Outlook 2003 in our organization. Some clients run Outlook 2007 some 2003 and both versions show the pf but it is not accessible.

I have followed this process to recover the data from the folder and exported everything I needed from it. The problem is more that I cannot delete the public folder from the 2007 database because it does not exist on the server that I can see with pf tools, however, it is still listed as a pf in user's Outlook. This folder had some permissions set on it that may have prevented it from being replicated to the 2007 servers when I was decommissioning the 2003 servers. I have created a new pf with all of the data in it but the old one still shows in Outlook with an error message stating there is a configuration problem on the server please contact your administrator. I cannot delete or manage anything on the pf from Outlook. It is not listed in the pf on the new server, but when I try to create a folder with the same name on the server I get an error message listed below. Summary: 1 item(s). 0 succeeded, 1 failed. Elapsed time: 00:00:00 David's Contacts Failed Error: Cannot create the object '\David's Contacts'. Please make sure that you specified all the required information correctly and that you have the necessary permissions to create it. MapiExceptionCollision: Unable to create folder. Looks like it turned in to Orphaned Object. Did you tried with PFDAVADMIN tool? also check in MESO object and if you see that try deleting from adsiedit

I can see the folder with PFDAVADMIN but I don't see it anywhere in adsiedit. I've tried running all the checks/fixes on it from PFDAVADMIN but it is still doing the same thing in Outlook. It's possible that I am not looking in the right place in adsiedit as I am not real familiar with using that tool. Is there anyway to just delete this folder? I have already recovered the contents and now I just want it gone.

Does the folder show up in the "Public Folder Management Console"(check the "Toolbox" in Exchange Management Console)? If it does, select it and click "Remove" in the task pane.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP---

The folder does not show up in the "Public Folder Management Console". It's really strange. It wasn't a mail enable folder so that makes sense.

Did you tried giving yourself as Owner rights on that PF using PFDAVADMIN?Vinod

Yes I have and I've removed everyone else from it so that way it at least no longer shows up in Joe User's Outlook. I can still see it in mine however and when I right click to try and delete it the option is greyed out and if I choose Properties it just says there is a problem on the exchange server and to contact my administrator. Funny thing is I'm the administrator....

Do you still have an Exchange 2003 ESM anywhere? Does it show up inthat snap-in's view of the public folder hierarchy? If t does, can youadd a public folder store to the replicas list?Ages ago there were a couple of registy edits you could make to hurryalong the removal of public folder "ghosts". This was one of them:e Age Limit". But that was back in the Exchange5.5 days. For how long has the folder been missing? IIRC the length of timebefore a "ghost" is remove is pretty long -- 30 or 60 days, I think. That long period was intentional so folders wouldn't be removed if aserver was out of commission for a long time.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP---
