Outlook 2007 & Exchange 2007 Authentication problem
I am currently having a problem with Outlook 2007 clients that have Mailboxes on our Exchange 2007 server. The users in particular run Outlook 2007 on Windows 7 Enterprise and never log out. Typically over the weekend, their connection gets "corrupted". Sometimes they can still operate in Exchange to an extent, but not everything is available or functioning properly. To resolve the issue, they can sometimes close and re-open outlook, but more often than not they have to reboot or log out of the computer and back on to restore full functionality. My XP user that remains logged in is not reporting this problem. I currently do not have any Vista users that remain logged in over night. Since the move to Windows 7 and Exchange 2007 occurred close to the same time for these users, I am not sure which is the culprit and I don't have enough users experiencing it to say authoritatively that it does not occur on other OS.Environment:Exchange 2007 SP2 Server (CAS, Mailbox, Hub) on Windows Server 2008Exchange 2003Windows Server 2003 Domain ControllersOutlook 2007Windows 7Windows VistaWindows XP

1. The symptom when the issue occurs on the client. Whether the user asked for authentication repeatedly?
2. Whether all the Windows 7 client encounter the problem?
3. Whether the issue only occurs when the user’s mailbox on Exchange 2007? If you move the user’s mailbox to Exchange 2003 whether the issue can be reproduced?
4. Whether the issue only occurs on Outlook 2007? 5. How frequently the issue occurs?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hi everybody,We have the same problem in our Organisation. Users with Windows 7 and Oulook 2007 where asked for authentication repeatedly.The issue only appears on windows 7 (on my XP SP3 computer next to my windows 7 notebook i never get the auth prompt)No related Eventlog messages, Security Log is ok.Our Environment:Windows 2003 R2 Server SP2, DC, Exchange 2007 SP2 (CAS, MBX, HT, UM), all updatesWe had the problems also bevor installing EX 2007 SP2.Any help would be higly appreciated!best regards,wolfgang

Sorry about the late response. When I used to use the newsgroups, the alerts were sent to my e-mail. Since I did not receive an e-mail I thought I did not receive a reply. Pays to familiarize yourself with the new interface before making assumptions.1. I will have to verify with the users. I don't think so.2. Very few (5) leave their machines on all the time. Those that do, all lose connection. Most (3) can reconnect by closing then opening Outlook. The remaining type frequently have to reboot to reconnect. It just occurred to me that both of these users may have PST files, I will have to verify.3. All users have mailboxes on Exchange 2007. The move to Windows 7 and Exchange 2007 occurred in a relatively close time frame. I am to the point now where I cannot move the users back to Exchange 2003.4. We only use Outlook 2007. Haven't had 2003 in the environment for over a year.5. I am told about it every couple of weeks. I will have to verify for more detail.Thank you.

On item 1, they do get the repeated request for authentication followed by the would you like to work offline dialog.

Users are able to reconnect without logging of the PC or rebooting if they CTRL-RIGHT-CLICK the Outlook systray icon and select "Connection Status". They then hit the "Reconnect" button and it works.Most likely their NIC's may be going to sleep, but this works for them.

We are having the exact same thing happening to some of our users but not all. I tried change the power settings on the NIC and system but th problem persist. Have you made any progress?

I have found no way to keep them connected or automatically reconnect. It only happens if Outlook is running when Exchange is rebooted (or some process runs on the exchange server - like a fully backup maybe) but the only way to reconnect is to reboot or
ctrl-right click on the Outlook icon, select "connection status..." and then hit the Reconnect button. It fixes the problem without a reboot, but is very annoying for the users.
In my case they are all IT types that use Linux and Mac, so they take this opportunity to bash Microsoft who can't even keepy their mail client connected to their server.

Tim, I'm just curious, but why don't you have the users shut down the computers at night? Or at least log them off, so Outlook and file shares aren't open.
I'm a newbee here and don't know much, and I always hear admins debating about leaving the computer on or shutting it off.....I still don't know the "right" answer.

Normal computers are shut down every night, but these belong to IT and are up 24/7. As they are also developers, they tend to have a lot of apps open and logging them out automatically wouldn't really work out either.

Tim, I get the picture now.....…supporting regular users takes a lot of patience.
