Outlook 2007 Rules offline
Hi All, Is it possible for all the rules I setup on my outlook client to run without been connected to the exchange server? What I am trying to achieve is if i set a rule to move certain messages to a different folder from my inbox, will the exchange server automatically move these messages without logging in to outlook i.e. i want the messages moved so when i login to outlook, I should only see the messages already moved and not outlook trying to move the messages at that moment. ThanksIsaac2k2

Hi Isaac, Generally, yes it should. You will see ones that require Outlook to be opened marked as Client Only. You'll also see those rules listed in OWA, under Options. SteveSteve Goodman Check out my Blog for more Exchange info or find me on Twitter

Yes . . . if none of the rules is marked as "client side". Client-side rules only work when the client is running. The server creates a special "deferred action" message in the mailbox that the client is responsible for acting on when it connects to the mailbox. If you stick to simple rules that don't have to examine the message body, or delete the message, or send a reply using a form, that's usually the way it works. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Yes, via OWA should work. But it should work just fine from Outlook though, and Outlook should warn you if it will only be client-side at the time of rule creation. Is this not happening for you, though? SteveSteve Goodman Check out my Blog for more Exchange info or find me on Twitter

The rules creation on outlook 2007 does not ask me if it server side or client side rule. how do i get that option? thanksIsaac2k2

It doesn't ask you beforehand, If it contains client-only actions (like, print or play a sound), it will warn you after creating the rule that it is client-only and will run only when Outlook is running.Steve Goodman Check out my Blog for more Exchange info or find me on Twitter
