Outlook 2007 keeps reverting back to old server name
We have roaming profiles here. There is no DFS or FRSinvolved so it's not a replication issue. Every once in a while users won't be able to open their Outlook, because the server name in their profile has reset back to the old (like couple years old)Exchange servers name, rather than the server they are currently on. I'm guessing this name must be floating around somewhere in the registry, or in a file in their profile, but I don't know where. I don't think there's anything hidden in their Active Directory account. Anybody have any ideas where I can look? The problem creeps up from time to time, so its something consistent, just not sure where.I know it's not from a group policy, as i've looked through all of those. We are currently at Outlook 2007, were at 2003 previously. not sure if its an old setting from 2003 orif there's some special file in their profilelurking around somewhere either.

Hi,Have you checked the Outlook installation package? A lot of companies have their Exchange server name hardcoded into the Outlook package.Leif

Right now Outlook is loaded into all our computer images. If it was hardcoded into that, where would that info be stored so i can look into it? in the registry, in a file?

Please check if the DNS record of old exchange server still exist? if so you can point it to new server. Vinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

That DNS record doesn't exist. The old Exchange server hasn't existing for a couple years either. that's why I'm thinking its just stored in a file or something somewhere.

Thanks. I had already looked in the .prf files, which some people do have. they all seem to be pointing to the right server, for the people that at least had them. I just wonder what would change it back to an old server name, or where else that setting could be stashed. it's a tricky one!

Can you try to manually configure a OL profile on a computer and check if it reverts back. Also if possible try to use the internal IP address of the Exchange Server rather than exchange server's name.Harpreet Singh Khandiyal (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375)

Hi, Based on my research, the Exchange Server Name of the Outlook Profile is saved in following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\your profile name\ 13dbb0c8aa05101a9bb000aa002fc45a Value Name: 001f662a (Which displayed in Outlook Profile) When Outlook starts, it will attempt to connect to the server indicated the Value 001f662a (FQDN of Exchange Server). If Outlook is not able to connect to server indicated in the Value 001f662a, Outlook will then use 001e6602 value (NetBIOS name of Exchange Server). If Outlook still cannot connect to NetBIOS name of Exchange Server, it will attempt to connect to GC according to following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\your profile name\ dca740c8c042101ab4b908002b2fe182 Value Name: 001f662a Mike Shen TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com

I usually manually configure them, but then every once in a great while some have problems after they log back in with it switched back. no rhyme or reason that i can figure out.

Thanks. Next time I have that problem, I'll have to look in all three of those keys to see where the problem lies. Still not sure how its getting set back though.
