Outlook 2010 : Contacting strange UNC on Startup

Greetings:

I have a user with Outlook 2010.  Upon startup, the splash screen hangs for a few seconds and says that it is contacting a weird unc.

What would cause outlook to contact a strange UNC?  What type of option/addin is this?  I'm not familiar with this message at all, so any insight would be appreciated?

Looks like cdn2.hubspot.net is some marketing site -- it is not something internal to our organization.

Somebody installed an addin. One likely source is

Hi Joe,

Why not just launch Outlook 2010 in safe mode and see if it's an add-in issue:

Press Win + R and type "outlook.exe /safe" in the blank box, then press Enter.

Once we confirm it's an add-in that is connecting to the specific UNC, then you can disable the add-ins one by one at a time to filter out it.

Thanks for the replies, but the only addins installed are what ship with office (Lync).

Something has been installed on this one particular system at some point in time related to HubSpot which is a marketing platform. From a purely logical standpoint - it would not be a generic issue related to Outlook since all of your other users would have the same issue (as would the rest of the world).

General information about what HubSpot is all about

The #1 Marketing Platform
http://www.hubspot.com/

When simply going to the domain "cdn2.hubspot.net"  it comes back with <The HubSpot account associated with the domain "cdn2.hubspot.net" has expired> which no doubt is related to the balance of the UNC blacked out in the screenshot. Would suggest (1) talking to this user to see what has been installed on the system (2) checking all programs installed via the Control Panel to see if there is anything related to HubSpot such as "Signals by HubSpot" etc.

Another relevant question that I should have asked - "Is this something that was presented from Day one of Outlook use or is this something that has started to show recently?

I was on vacation and didn't have internet to reply.  Sorry about the delay.

The question wasn't really answered, but you can leave it marked.  I don't expect we'll get to the bottom of the issue.

The issue popped up once and then went away, which is a little bothersome.  It's not an add-in, at least, it's not listed in the add-ins page.

Thanks.

I have the same issue.   I also have nothing installed as an add-in.   It appears to me to be some sort of malware, but it was not found by several anti-malware tools.

If the email involved has a 'tracking pixel" - no addin is required - no malware will be detected. Tracking pixels are generally invisible so you would also not see anything in the message.

I think that was it.   I also just noticed the same thing for a Citibank logo, which was, obviously, very disconcerting...

Just need to view the "source" of any HTML based message to see any links. Also, just as an aside, when you're not sure of the source of a given message containing URL's - always a good idea to verify that the link shown in the message is actually the URL you are being sent to. What is displayed in the message is not necessarily what you will be sent to - as in the following simple example

i.e. you would think that clicking on this link http://www.google.com would send you to Google and not Microsoft which is what will happen if you click on it.
