Outlook 2010 Rules and Alerts grayed out

Hello Members,

I have just installed Office 2010 plus, with outlook 2010. I am not running on exchange,

just a regular pop email account. I am unable to create mail rules from the Rules and Alerts section

on the "File" tab. All the options are grayed out, and not clickable. I did not have this issue with

Office 2007. What is wrong here?  I am running Win 7 Pro, intel platform

Thanks,

Thanks for the links, but my problem is that I cannot click on any of the

icons, as they are all greyed out, I cannot create a rule or run a rule.

I may downgrade to Outlook 2007 - that worked fine.  I have also tried uninstalling and re-installing

without success.

Did you upgrade your Outlook from 2007 to 2010?

Please create a new profile after Outlook 2010 installed and test it again. This issue may also caused by 3rd add-ons conflict in Outlook 2010. Please disable them to work it out. (Test in Outlook.exe /safe)

Thanks.

Hello Tony,

At last the correct answer.  I did upgrade from Outlook (office) 2007 to Outlook 2010 (and Office) via the migration tool in Windows.

Migrated from Win XP to Win 7.  I have been fighting this issue for weeks.

adding a new profile solved the problem.

Thanks AGain,

Eric

Sharing the problem - but completely not tech savvy. Where/how would I create a new profile?

Thanks!

This can also happen if you create a profile with no email accounts.

I created a profile that I just wanted to use for RSS and the default "Rules..." button didn't even appear on the toolbar.  I then added "Manage Rules..." manually to a custom ribbon group, but it was greyed out.

After adding an email account to the profile, the default button appeared as expected, and I was able to get rid of my custom one, and finally get down to business creating rules.

...Thus having vacated yet another dim undocumented corner of the MS usability wasteland.
