Outlook 2010 runs but window won't open

Outlook 2010
Issue: When I go to run microsoft outlook 2010. The program is running, however it will not open. The only way to run the program and use it is doing "outlook.exe /safe" This issue occurred after outlook froze and I had to end
its process.
What I have tried so far:
- Re-Creating mail profile
- Repair Office
- Re-Install office
- Repair PST
- outlook.exe /resetnavpane
- Disabling all add-ons
I am all out of things I can think of. Anyone have any other suggestions?

From your description, I understand that Outlook 2010 cannot work properly. The only way to run the program and use it is doing "outlook.exe /safe". If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.
Since the problem does not occur in the safe mode, this issue might be related to some third-party add-ins in the Office program, we can try to disable them. Normally, you could do the following to disable the conflict add-ins in your Office program:
Disable add-ins
***************************
a) Click File menu, click Options > Add-in, click Go button in the Manage: Com-in Add.
b) Check if there are any add-ins, clear the checkbox to disable them.
c) Close the Office program and restart it.
d) Add one check back each time to the list of Add-In, restart the Office program, and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.

Regarding this situation, let’s test the issue in Clean Boot.
Test in Clean boot Mode
===============
Let’s disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps:
1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.
2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.
Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This should not affect the system or other programs. We may still manually run these programs later.

How to return from the Clean Boot state

After the troubleshooting, we can return from the clean boot state:

I think I am having the same issue. I can see the Outlook program open in the task bar, however it will not display on the desktop. I have tried all the listed above with no success either. Everything was working fine until this morning. The only change
I'm aware of, is the computer hard crashed and after rebooting i an crtical windows updates. Everything else works fine including other Office programs. Only Outlook is causing an issue.

Hi all,
I'm having the exact same problem here, with Windows 7 x64 and Outlook 2010.
No other way of opening Outlook besides /safe. Here's what I've done so far:
1. Run it in safe mode (Outlook.exe /safe). It works
2. Create a new mail profile in the same user account. Doesn't open. Same as with old profile.
3. Create a new Windows user and open Outlook in that account, with a new mail profile. It works fine.
4. Back to original windows user. Run it in safe:1, safe:3 and safe:4. Safe:4 gives an invalid argument error. Safe:1 and 3, it's the same behavior than opening it normally. Window won't open.
5. Disable all add-ins with safe mode and restarted. No luck, same thing.
6. Regarding the last step, there is one add-in I can't disable: Microsoft VBA for Outlook. When I go to the "COM add-ins" window, it's not listed there, so I can't disable it. And it's the only add-in that remains active. Don't know how to disable it.
7. Deleted the .dll responsible for the VBA for Outlook and restarted. It reinstalled VBA and all remains the same. Only opens in Safe mode.
8. Run "outlook.exe /resetnavpane" just to check it wouldn't do any difference.... I was right... still no luck.
9. With "Outlook Tools" I ran a "ScanPst", but it found no errors. Nothing new.
10. Finally, I tried to Repair MS Office, but no luck there, either.
Can you point me anything else besides uninstalling Office and reinstall it? If I have to do that:
a) what data do I have to backup, besides my PSTs end outlook rules?
b) Can I backup all my email accounts (I have 4 different email accounts configured in Outlook) definitions?
c) As they are POP accounts, I know that if I delete everything, Outlook will transfer all my emails that are still in the POP servers. How can I stop this?
Hope you can help me out, because I've spent all afternoon reading forums and tips, but seems no one has had my exact problem.
I'm very suspicious of that VBA (step 6 in my description) add-in, but can't figure out what to do...

and then I don't know which is this correct path...

If Outlook works as a different user, then try this (while logged on as the user experiencing the problem):
1. Close Outlook
2. Open Regedit and Locate this key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Preferences
3. ** BACKUP the Preferences Key!!! **
4. Then after backing up the Preferences Key, delete it (renaming it does not make a difference)
5. Restart Outlook

Unfortunately, I'm having the same problem - Outlook 2010 is "stuck" minimised, and I can't find a way to restore it. I am also forced to use safe mode :(

Uninstalled Office 2010 Plus 64bit, installed Office 2010 Plus 32bit: nothing change....Outlook won't open.
The only way to use it is in safe mode.

is to do a system restore on my latest restore point and then all good till next time......

I have a similar problem, but the fix above did not solve it.
I am running windows 7 with outlook 2010, 64 bit.
There is no problem opening and closing the main outlook window, but when I try and open a window by clicking on reply, or double clicking on an email in the inbox, the window will not open. I can see the window if I put the mouse over the Outlook
icon in the task bar, along with the main window, but if I right click on it, restore is greyed out and clicking on the window will not restore it.
This problem appeared yesterday, and I have tried many things to fix it with no luck. The windows do work fine when outlook is started with the /safe option, but disabling all add-ins does not solve it, nor does various suggested techniques, such as
unlocking and relocking the task bar, cascading windows when the main window is maximized, setting run maximized in the outlook properties dialog, etc.
As a result of this problem, I cannot reply to any email using Outlook, so please help.

I'm having the same issue running Windows 7 64 bit. However, I know that my problem started instantly after installing Cyberlink Power Director and Quicktime with updates to Quicktime.
Since I've uninstalled everything relating to QT, with no luck fixing it. Also, I have software running that puts an additional tab on all open windows. I can tell you that Outlook is NOT minimized when this problem occurs. It is in the upper left hand
corner of the screen. I can see my extra tab floating up there in the corner, attached to Outlook, but no Outlook is visible.
Although this is not worth anything as far as a fix, but I hope that it can lead to the problem being resolved, WE NEED OUR MAIL! :P
EDIT: I tried the above work around in the youtube video above, it does work. HOWEVER this is not a permanent fix.
It doesn't work with my shortcut on the taskbar, only the link in the start menu for some reason, but right click on the link, click properties,
change the start up view from normal, to Maximized. It will allow Outlook to start initially, but if you try to resize, minimize, or anything else,
it's invisible again. :/
As I said, this is good to get an immediate access to mail, not at all up to Microsoft standards though. Thanks, Danny.

I had three, Hotmail (Primary), Gmail, and College. I deleted my gmail, and college, leaving my primary account, and that's it. Works every time now, I haven't added them back in, but I'll play with it a little more and report back my findings.

Now I'm able to get Outlook opened both in maximized and in normal window.
what it cares about the reason or nature of the fix/workaround?
I still wait for a solution that only Microsoft can give us, but in the meantime using this workaround the problem does'nt appear

It works.
Now I'm able to get Outlook opened both in maximized and in normal window.
what it cares about the reason or nature of the fix/workaround?

Interesting. Considering that I tried the same thing as you (fixing via "preferences") prior to removing my two accounts, and the problem persisted. There may be another factor in this problem considering that some say it works for them, some say otherwise.
It seems both our methods obviously work, but for different scenarios.
I too wait for a solution from Microsoft, as I said before, they are far to big of a company not to have this fixed by now.

down/disrupt it - thus I saved the link to the youtube video for later.
Just taking a chance in absence of other ideas, I updated the originally installed Outlook shortcut to 'Run as Administrator'.
Voila!!!!
Outlook opens up, displays, etc like a charm! WHY? I DON'T KNOW! only annoyance now is to either switch off UAC or having to accept it by default every time.
At least I can work!!
Update: More confusion - After adding an account and removing it again to see if all is keeping up, I closed and restarted Outlook, click on Privilege request and it opens. Then I closed it again, edited the shortcut and REMOVED the administrator priviliges.
Outlook is STILL working fine!
HUH? Microsoft? Perhaps if someone can do this procedure with a before and after snapshot of the registry to see what changed???
Just note that my doiwnload is still running, so there's no windows reboot that would clear anything that may still be stuck in memory....

I had the exact same problem, tried all the above but to no avail.
However, now it is running fine!
Here is what I did (Windows 7):
1. Right-click shortcut which you use to open Outlook
2. Right-click on "Microsoft Outlook 2010" and choose "Properties"
3. Under tab called "Shortcut", change window size from "Normal" to "Maximized"

I had the exact same problem, tried all the above but to no avail.
However, now it is running fine!
Here is what I did (Windows 7):
1. Right-click shortcut which you use to open Outlook
2. Right-click on "Microsoft Outlook 2010" and choose "Properties"
3. Under tab called "Shortcut", change window size from "Normal" to "Maximized"

Essentially something messes up and Outlook will only run Maximised. Change the shortcut to run Outlook Maximised, then right-click on the taskbar and Cascade Windows. Then you may be able to move/resize Outook.
Microsoft: A couple of silly posts where you didn't bother to read what the poster actually said, gave stock answers then nothing. What does it take to get you to look into issues properly once its clear stock answers aren't going to work
and then fix your software? No wonder more and more people are switching to Macs and pads.

I can't believe the solution was this simple. It makes no sense how it worked but it worked for me. After uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times, messing with the registry, and trying to do complete uninstalls and reinstalls for days this finally worked.

It actually turns out to be a stupid screw up that Microsoft folk should know about.
What's happened is that your Outlook main window thinks it's on some non-existent screen. It is opened, just now where you can see it.

I had the following problem. When I would open Outlook 2010 from the Start menu, the icon would appear in the Taskbar,
but the Main Window would never open. Running in Safe mode would work, with the obvious limitations and annoyances. I wanted my "normal" Outlook back.
I do not claim to be the one to resolve this, but I will collect what I have learned from other threads and sites to post
it here for future users to benefit from.
The resolution had nothing to do with new profiles, registry edits, new XML files and no command line operators. I tried
them all as other posters have noted and to no avail.
The steps that resolved the issue for me are as follows... don't laugh.
1. Right click on the Shortcut you use to launch Outlook 2010 and choose Properties.
2. On the Shortcut tab next to Run, change it from Normal window, to Maximized.
3. Click OK.
4. Launch Outlook normally using the shortcut you just edited. (If you edited the Start menu shortcut use ONLY it)
In my case Outlook launched fine, but maximized. Clicking the Restore button would send it irretrievably back to the Taskbar
forcing me to force close.
5. With Outlook open and Maximized, right click in the Taskbar and choose Cascade Windows. Presto!
Now I could minimize, restore, maximize, restore all day long without trouble.
6. Final step is to right click on the previously edited Shortcut and change Run back to "Normal window".
I hope that this can help at least one other person.

But again, this is not a permanent solution, it comes back again and again at some of our work station. Would really like M$ to find a permanent solution to this.

I went through every step possible when i had this issue with no luck, besides ctrl-alt-delete then right click outlook and select maximize. but what actually worked and appears to still be working is, when outlook is opened(but cannot be seen on screen).
right click the task bar in a free area and select cascade windows. Outlook is back and can be resized again.

That's what worked for me (maximise, then Cascade Windows). The problem is clearly as described, that Outlook is appearing on some non-existent screen. I get the same problem with Chrome (which isn't a MS product) if I shut it down from an external
screen, then try to run it on my laptop without the external screen attached (eg when going from home to work) - Chrome opens on the non-existent screen and won't move to the visible one. Whereas if I unplug the external screen whilst Chrome is running,
it jumps to the visible screen, then when it shuts down it saves its last screen position (ie on the visible screen).
So the problem is somewhere in the design. And I remember finding a solution to the OUtlook problem where i found a specific entry in REGISTRY which set the startup position, and deleted it (can't find it again). I suspect this is what is causing
the problem - a rogue REGISTRY entry which keeps re-inserting itself.
So, should you go to a Mac or an IPAD? Yes: they work because you can't do anything, so you can't do anything to break the system. If you enjoy being so restricted that all you can do is type and see things, then a Mac is ideal for you. But
if you want flexibility, MS is the best option, only every so often you will hit problems like this.
Still think MS should come up with a solution, and quickly!

Office should be a working tool for me, but these behaviours are embarassing.
I'm not sure what caused the window not to show up, if a Windows7 update or the installation of iTunes.

If you are running an ATI Graphics Adapter you can try making Outlook the "focus" and hitting Ctrl + WinKey + X. That will bring the Outlook window to another screen. Most likely your main screen. For some reason the ATI graphics adapter
I have had an issue and thought I had a 3rd screen and that is where Outlook came up. HTH.

A "work around" that works for me is..
Hit - Ctr alt delete - go to "processes" tab
Highlight OUTLOOK.exe and select "End Process" option.
Then Outlook will launch successfully from the task bar and start menu.
But why it happens is still unsolved - but this is a faster solution than safe mode and rebooting your pc.

Using Danny's video as a starting point I then used your suggestion and removed my account. (all I had was one). Once I re-added my account, the problem did not return.
I suspect all of this could be handled via control panel, and not have to use Danny's workaround.
This issue looks like one I used to see in Word '97 & '00. When it would load, but was off screen. You would select "move" from the icon, and then use the arrow keys to move back on screen.
This problem started for me after a reboot, but I left numerous Outlook windows open. Not sure if there is a cause and effect here, but maybe somebody else can use that info.

I was solving similar problem for my sister although it was with skype. After I ran spybot and ccleaner and deleted all the spyware and stupid toolbars installed in internet explorer the problem went away. The window started to be visible on desktop again.
Oh and also it helped for internet explorer to run normally again.
2 days later she called and said she have the same problem with outlook. It looks like running as its visible in taskbar, but the on desktop is nothing.
The problem in her case was with 2 desktops activated in settings of graphic card. Seems the Outlook window was opening in secondary desktop instead of primary. So what I did was disabling the 2nd desktop to be used by windows.
And voila! Problem solved.
Hope it helps someone else too.

Sounds like some people are having Outlook open off screen (easy fix, as noted above, by moving it back onto screen), while others may have the issue of it opening ON SCREEN at zero width and zero height--see

Alternatively, you can right click on the task bar while Outlook is running and select Cascade Windows. This allowed me to use Outlook in windowed mode again.

In your initial post, it does not sound like you followed ALL the instructions given. You appear to have missed the the step that actually FIXES the problem:

This happens to me often when I forget to move my programs to the main window before I undock my laptop. HOWEVER, I can always right-click on the program icons in the taskbar (with Win7 or 8 you have to hover and right-click on the actual program screen
thumbnail when it appears), select "Move" and then use the left arrow key to move the window onto the main screen.
That didn't help with THIS particular Outlook problem; "Cascade Windows" was the only solution.

Same issue here with Outlook 2010 under Win8x64. Everything was fine since a had to hard power off my PC.
The only solution worked for me was deleting the registry value "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Office Explorer\Frame", so most of Outlook's settings are kept.

I ran into the same issue today with Outlook 2013.
I found out, that maximizing the window using the shortcut Windows+Arrow-Up still worked. So it seems that Outlook is only invisible in window mode (maybe somehow moved out of the visible area of the screen).
The solution for me: docking the window to one side of the Screen by using Windows+Arrow-Left or Windows+Arrow-Right and then resizing the window.

That's the solution!, although an easier thing to do would be to just right click the taskbar and choose cascade right form the outset. This then simply cascades all open windows - no need to do the maximising startup. Worked for me and saved my client

I had the same problem. Outlook is running but you cannot see it. Try this:
1. Click on (Open) Oulook and then put your cursor on the the oulook Icon, in the TASKBAR, a little pop window will appear right above the icon.
2. Move our curse to the pop up and right click on Maximum.

This worked for me, odd that Office would have such a stupid problem like this but whatever.
Thanks for the fix though, all the above I tried as well with no luck, the youtube link saved me from an Office reinstall.

Worked for me too - phew.
I was running Windows 8 64 bit and Outlook 2010 Pro 64 bit (as part of Office 365 E3 subscription) and the issue began after an application crash.

The simple fix that has worked for me is to right click on the task bar (not the icon itself) then left click Cascade Windows. Don't know why it works but it did for me.

Windows + arrow didnt do it, but cascade did and I will use that trick whenever I get stuck with off screen windows from undocking and switching from 2 monitor to 1.

Found a fix!
- right click on your outlook shortcut
- click properties
- In the "Run" dropdown menu select "Maximized"
- Apply
- reopen Outlook

Guys this was my solution I had exactly same problem as you described, it started after a problem closing down the outlook yesterday, this morning it would not start the window. Tried some of the first steps of disabling the add-ons. same result as most
of you, no luck. The window rezising described by dannybridi is what worked for me.

i tried most of the solutions and it resolved temporarily and later re-appeared.
by far this was the simplest solution and seems to be working fine so far.

Another solution to move the app's "normal window" back to a visible desktop:
First - Force the application onto a visible display.
- Solution: In application link properties set 'Run:' to 'Maximized', click Apply, then open the application (Outlook in this case). It fills the screen. Click once on the title bar for good measure.
Second - Reset the normal view of the application
- Solution: Press Windows+left arrow keys simultaneously. Now resize and put the app window wherever you like.
Finally - Go back to the application properties and change the application link properties back to 'Normal window'

and only work off the monitor. Well when I opend screen resolution I noticed that it showed I had 3 active monitors... Well where is the third one because I only have (2) two. The laptop monitor and the external dell monitor. That means it must be opening
on the mystery third monitor. I opened the laptop and duplicated monitor 1 and 2 which are my laptop monitor and the dell monitor and what do you know. My outlook screen popped up! Glad I can help because I to went through this and im IT desktop support for
my company.

all you have to do is right-click on the Outlook icon, choose Properties, and set it to run window: MAXIMIZED
by default it launches in a 'normal' size window.
just force-close outlook, make this setting change, and it works. if you still have issues afterwards then right-click on the taskbar, choose Cascade Windows, and you'll be permanently set.

The last thing that i try is with msconfig, i was (without solution) in the second step: How to return from the Clean Boot state --------------------------
After the troubleshooting, we can return from the clean boot state: 1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account
Control (UAC) window. 2. On the "General" tab, click "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services". 3. Click OK. Click Restart when you are prompted to restart your computer.
i was waiting with not restarting my computer and continue to read this article. I have search and found some others forums. In a forum ( http://www.outlookbanter.com/outlook-installation/2461-can-only-see-outlook-when.html
) i have read the solution: Right click on the task bar and choose "Cascade Windows".
Thats all friends. I have cashade the windows and after i have made a restarting because the msconfig. From this moment i am ok with the outlook.
It;s open finally in window, i have check in all the add-ins i need without problem.

Windows 7 Pro SP1
Outlook 2010
Issue: When I go to run microsoft outlook 2010. The program is running, however it will not open. The only way to run the program and use it is doing "outlook.exe /safe" This issue occurred after outlook froze and I had
to end its process.
What I have tried so far:
- Re-Creating mail profile
- Repair Office
- Re-Install office
- Repair PST
- outlook.exe /resetnavpane
- Disabling all add-ons
I am all out of things I can think of. Anyone have any other suggestions?
maybe this might help some people....
I right clicked on the window, selected "size", then used the arrows on the keyboard. A window appeared and i opened it a bit, then used the mouse to create a normal minimized window size. issue fixed.

Solution: If Outlook is open but you cannot see it, close it by right clicking it in the task bar -> Close.
Once closed, right click the outlook icon you use to launch Outlook -> Properties -> Shortcut Tab -> Change the "run" drop down to "maximized". Apply.
