Outlook 2010 slow to respond after period of inactivity

Hi there,

I and a few of my colleagues seem to have an issue with Outlook 2010 whereby if we leave it inactive for a while and then come back to it, then it comes up and says it is connecting to Microsoft exchange and then seems to hang there for a while before proceeding. I find this happens if I leave it and then try to reply to a mail. It hangs when I click send.

I have opened my connections for Outlook and seen that I have 2 Directory connections and 2 Mail connections. When this hanging happens the Directory services show and re-connecting. The Mail connections stay as established.

I have tried disabling and re-enabling Encryption of data between Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Exchange. But it happens in both scenario's. I have removed all PST files and also ensured that I have as minimal e-mails in my mailbox as possible. I have also tried to re-create the mail profile, but it still happens even then.

Exchange is running Version 14.3.195 and Outlook is running with all the latest windows updates and Office service packs applied.

I have tried clicking Send/Receive when coming back to it after a while and it seems to do it. In fact new mails regularly appear throughout. But as soon as you open one and try to click send that is when it happens.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can use this tool in troubleshooting  Office Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT) information

its provides a detailed report of your installed Office programs. This report includes many parameters about Office program configuration. It also highlights known problems that are found when OffCAT scans computers. For any problems that are listed in the report, you are provided a link to a public-facing article (usually a Microsoft Knowledge Base article) about each problem so that you can read about possible fixes.

Hi Mahmoud,

Thanks for that. However I have run that and the only thing it said might be an issue was some hotfix for a problem with roomfinder, which is a feature we don't ever use.

It also says the RPC encryption is disabled which may cause an issue. But as I said, I have this issue both with testing with it on and disabling it (on both client and server side).

Any other suggestions?

Hello Paladux;

Make sure you don't have any firewall inspection between clients and server, on the other hand you can using the best practice analyzer on your exchange server, it will help you if the problem form server side.

Hi,

Are you using Outlook with cached Exchange mode or online Exchange mode? Please try switching between the two mode and then check if you can reproduce the issue.

Please also try starting Outlook in safe mode and check if this issue continues. To do this, press Windows key + R to open the Run command, type outlook /safe and press Enter.

If above doesn't help, please also have a look at the following KB article and follow the listed steps to troubleshoot the issue:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2695805

Please let me know the result.

I have run Outlook in Safe mode and it does still happen. Running through that KB article I did as it suggested. No Add-ins, still happens. Outlook in non-cached and cached mode, still happens either way.

Oddly enough though, when i put it in safe mode it seemed ok for a few days, but then it started up again this week.

Running latest version of Outlook 2010, all SP's and updates applied. Get the same issue on a pc with no PST files as one with PST files attached.

Running a Gen 3 SSD. The only Add-ins that I have on all my domain pc's are Exchange Add-in and Kaspersky add-in. But this issue predates Kaspersky.

I have also tried re-creating a new Mail profile with no joy.

Any other suggestions?
