I have Outlook 2010 on Windows 7.   It works fine and shows pictures correctly.  Then after a while, it starts showing the placeholder text instead.  I can still right click and say copy and get the picture on the clipboard or save it to a file.    A reboot cures the problem, but it comes again after a while.

Any hints?

No, that didn't occur to me.  Why would this matter?

Open any email message, click File - Options - Mail - Editor Options - Advanced, uncheck the option - "Show Picture placeholders"

No, this is not the problem.  As mentioned, pictures are shown correctly, then at some point in time Outlook stops showing pictures.   A reboot will remedy the problem, but it will come back again.
