Outlook 2013 - Switching mails hang up outlook after network call to exchange

Hello,

i got an big performance problem with my outlook 2013 users.

We have users which have activated the Reading Pane. This users have huge problems, when switching fast between mails.

We can reproduce the issue any time with just switching fast between the mails by clicking on them. After 2 to 5 mails outlook starts to hang up to 30 seconds.

What i have found out so far, is that outlook starts to do some query to the exchange server, but for now i could not figure out what outlook does in that time.

Someone got any idea, what that could be, or how i can approach the problem ?

Hi,

Are you on Online Mode or Cached Exchange Mode.

Put the PC out of network and then check how is the performance Offline.

This behavior is normally seen in Online Outlook Mode with high network latency between the server and the client.

You might need to take a look at the disk counters on the Exchange Server and see what's going on there.

Hi,

i am using Outlook Online Mode. The normal network is a gigabit network. But the Problem exists on our servers too. I tried to set up a Testclient with windows 7 and outlook 2013 within our VMWare environment which has a 10 Gigabit network.

As i was looking more into it, i tried outlook safe mode. In safe Mode the Problem is gone and outlook runs perfectly smooth. But as i try looking forward on the exchange side, i have not a good idea which tools to use to take a deeper look.

If the issue does not exist when running Outlook in safe mode, then the issue is most likely being caused by a plugin.  What I woudl do now, is launch Outlook and manually disable all your plugins, and start testing with each plugin to find the cause.

Yeah i was going for that aswell, but not really any result.

I set up a fresh Windows 7 machine and installed Outlook 2013. Not More. No Even Updates at the beginning.

Problem still persists. After i disabled all addons and plugins the problem persists. Safe Mode -> Problem gone.

After Windows and Office Updates the result was the same.

I have run a procmon at the exchange server and can see the same result.

The client send something and 5-15 seconds later the exchange response with it.

This is the procmon result from the exchange. The Problem is that if i set no filter, there are so many entries, i cannot figure out where the time is lost.

But for now i have no clue, what is outlook queryieng from exchange in normal mode and not in safe mode.

oh wait... i dont htink the preview screen is enabled in safe mode.  Check the disk performance counters, i/o, disk queue length etc.  See how that's performing.

Hello,

If the issue does not occur in Outlook Safe Mode, the cause should be one of the add-ins. You can remove them directly via registry:

Back up the following registry and rename the followings:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions (If it exists)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions (If it exists)

Restart the Outlook and see if the issue is gone.

Thanks,

@Outlook Safe Mode: The Reading Pane is by default disabled in Outlook Safe Mode. But you can enable it and the problem doesn't show up in safe mode.

@Registry Keys: The first two keys was found and renamed. The last both are not existing. But there weren't more than the default. But the problem still persists.

I am thinking that, Outlook is trying to make some request to the server. As far as i found out with wireshark, at the point Outlook is stuck it is making same kind of Remote-Procedure-Call to the Exchange 2010 Server.

Take a look at this and see what your counters look like.

You can install HTTP Watch or Fiddler on your workstation. Open IE and start a capture. Both programs will log Outlook's HTTP(s) activity. That will give you a better idea on what Outlook is doing when it hangs.

Any particular reason why you aren't doing cached exchange mode?  I would be curious if the issues occur in cached mode.  It might be worth testing with.

You can use resource monitor on your exchange server to check the server performance.  Click on the "Disk" tab and note what your disk queue lengths are.  Anything over 5 for extended periods of time is not good.

I will try the HTTP Watch, but i tested it without the Exchange HTTPS Configuration. Currently outlook have to use mapi, because no https proxy is configured in outlook.

Cache Mode: There are several problems with cache mode. First, There are Local files, which are in some cases are not wanted to have. And as well on our terminalservers, we can't activate exchange cache mode, otherwise the profile folders would explode.

So far i tested quite a few of the counteres and i am more than happy to say, that i am always under the optimal number.

Edit: Did the other counters now and all looks fine. Someone got any idea, how can i figure out, what outlook is trying to query with the call. In the screenshort you see outlook sending a packet to the server and the server recieves it. Then it takes up to 20 seconds until the server is sending the information back to outlook. Now i need to some how figure out, what the server is searching for in this time.

For now i only now, does not show up in outlook save mode and does not show up on all users. Further more, i checked the mailbox databases und migrated mailboxes without results on the problem. The Counters look fine.

Whats next ? Any idea ?
