In addition, I'd like to clarify the following questions in order to resolve the issue more efficiently:
What file type of attachment did you open? Does this issue happen to all file types of attachments?
By "A the appropriate check boxes are as they should be in the trust centre dialog box", do you mean you have disabled the "Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments" option from Trust Center settings?
