Outlook Attachment - '&' removed from Attachment Filename
XP 2002 SP3, Office 2003. I have a Word file that has two & in the filename. I send this out to a team for review, they all detach the file to hard drive, edit, then re-attach to an Outlook email and return to me. From one of the team, the filename of the attachment has the two & removed, not replaced but removed. He says that he is not deleting them himself. As one of the & is in the customers name, this is not a good feature. Is there a check box somewhere that needs to be checked or unchecked to stop "unusual" filename characters being remoeved from attachments? Many thanks DeanH

Hi Ampersand, Could the client reproduce the issue? I want to verify some information about your description, 1. did the issue client make a test to forward the intial message, what about the result, is the char "&" removed 2. did the issue client edit the the attachment in local, and then attach it to a new emal to other? If so, please confirm the client has not done any change on the file. So, we could narrow down the issue to do more reseach regarding to your issue. You also could post your issue on below forum special for outlook feature issue, you will get more help from there. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-us/outlook/threads Regards! Gavin

Hi Gavin. Thanks for responding. Thanks for the reply and here are my responses. 1. The user can and does repreduce the issue. We have tested in various modes: a. I sent them a file attachment which includes the & chararcter. The user dettaches the file to HD, edits document but not the filename. Attaches to a new email and send back to me. The & char is removed. b. The user creates his own word file, includes the & in the filename. Attaches to email and send to me. The & is removed. 2. All other users on the original email, do the same, save down to HD, edit, atteach to new email, & NOT removed. The other forum you have linked to is for Outlook, but I was pointed to Exchange from the Outlook forum in the first place - 'pillar' and 'post' comes to mind ;-) Thanks DeanH

Hi Ampersand, Could you please test through recreating the special user's profile, or make a test on other computer? And then make a test through OWA, please post the result. Which version office does the issue client use, could you please install other version office and make a test. Regards! Gavin

I am not corporate IT so I cannot start deleting/creating user profiles. Other users I have checked, 12+, do not have this problem. What is OWA? As soon as the user is back in the office I will find out the version of office the user has, but as we are a very strick corporate regime I am sure it will be the same as many of the other users I have tested. Thanks for the response. DeanH

After some investigation I have determined where the ampersand is being removed from the attachment filename. The ampersand is removed when the user ‘opens’ the attachment, i.e. the temp file goes to the OLK* folder, immediately the ampersand is removed and displays as such in the top bar of the window. If the user Saves the attachment, instead of Open, the ampersand is retained. I tested it on my own machine and have noticed the same if I Open and not Save. This happens with Word and Excel files tested. Any ideas anyone? I have suggested to the user that it is basic good practice to always Save the attachment and not Open. Many thanks DeanH
