I take your point and it might be the font issue. To troubleshoot this problem, please ask the sender which font he uses, and then go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Fonts and double-click the certain font. Does it open correctly?
In addition, this issue would also be caused by text format or Email transition.
Please let the sender change the text format from HTML to plain text or RTF to check if you still get the same result through both Outlook client site and OWA.
