Outlook Inbound Alias Address Question

Hoping someone can shed some light.

We have a distribution group configured in Exchange 2010 that has a large number of aliases. When the emails arrive to the members of the distribution group, the 'To' line displays the main smtp address rather than the alias address. Is there a way to determine which alias address the email was actually sent to or is it possible to configure it such that the alias appears in the 'To' line?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

My understanding is that you want to configure the Distribution Group to display the alias name in the users' "To" field, instead of the email address name like "abc@def.com", is this correct? If no, please provide some screenshots to explain this to me; to protect your private information, you can send the images to our email address:

ibsofc@microsoft.com

If yes, please let me know if other email addresses in the users' "To" field display as email address or alias; also please check how it displays on OWA and let me know the result, this will help me to determine the next steps.

Hey Melon,

Thanks for the response. I found a workaround for my users that I tried to post but my account has not been verified yet so I can't post links or pics.

I will respond once my account has been verified with my process.

Regards,

Mike

Hey Melon,

Thanks for getting back to me on this. I apologize for the delayed response, but I was able to provide our users with a work around that allows them to view the SMTP header of the inbound email which displays the alias address.

To answer your question, you are correct in describing the issue. When an outside sender sends an email to an alias address that we have setup on a distribution group, the receivers of the email only see that the email was sent to their main SMTP address (the 'To' line of the mail item). They needed the ability to view the actual address (the alias address) that the sender sent the email to.

Here are the steps I gave our users to view the alias address via the internet headers that can be found in the message options:

Add the Message Options icon to the Quick Access Toolbar

1. Click the drop-down arrow next to the existing Quick Access Toolbar icons then select the More Commands... option.

2. Select the Quick Acess Toolbar from the left options then under Choose commands from drop-down list choose the Commands Not in the Ribbon option. Highlight Message Options... then click the Add >>button. Click the OK button when completed.

View The Header Info

3. You should now see a new Message Options icon available in the Quick Access Toolbar at the top left of Outlook. Simply highlight any email, then click the Message Options icon to view the SMTP headers. In the Internet headers section you may need to scroll down a bit to locate the 'To:' address but this should show you the alias address that the sender used.

If there is an easier way to do this please let me know. Thanks again!

Regards,
