Outlook doesn't show messages imported by ExMerge from PST
Hi everyone, On Server A (Exchange 2003 SP1), I used ExMerge to dump some mailboxes to PST files. On Server B (Exchange 2003 SP2, different domain), I used ExMerge to initialize (fill) some mailboxes using those PST files. When I look in Exchange System Manager under Private Store > Mailboxes, I see the expected number of messages sitting in those users' mailboxes after ExMerge finishes. However, when those users connect for the first time with Outlook (they are switching from Server A's domain to Server B's domain), they do not see those imported messages. Their inbox shows empty and my pre-loaded messages do not appear. They will see any new messages sent to them after their first connection, but they never see the mail messages I loaded into their mailboxes with ExMerge, although they do see their contact and calendar entries! No errors are recorded or displayed... Outlook simply doesn't see or show the mailmessages that came from my PST files. Are those messages somehow marked "already read" since they were viewed on Domain A, and therefore not being pushed to Outlook once on Domain B? Any other ideas out there? I would appreciate them a lot! Austin

Hi, The messages should be there. Stupid question but you haven't created 2 mailboxes pr. user? Leif

System Manager is showing only one mailbox per user, so that part looks pretty good. It's odd that users can see contacts and calendar entries just fine, but their inboxes look empty. If they've been running Outlook in cached mode, could that cause any problems? I know that many Inbox messages were in those PST files because I read the ExMerge logs and I saw how long it took to load Inbox while ExMerge ran and I know it also transferred the right number of messages in my own account. So I'm sure that the messages were actually loaded into the store. When I get back to the office today, I'm going to telnet to the POP3 server and issue a LIST to see how many messages POP3 is reporting. Thanks for the reply, Leif.

Hi, You could also try to run Outlook in online mode, just in case - it shouldn't make any difference. Leif

Fascinating. I had pre-loaded the mailboxes, then everyone connected for the first time to Domain B yesterday. They saw nothing but contacts and calendar entries. They signed off for the evening and went home. When they came to the office this morning, all their mail magically appeared. We didn't touch a thing on the server or the Outlook clients. I guess it just took a while for something to sync or replicate.
