Outlook users cannot download offline address book updates
Hi,
My customer is running Exchange 2007, and some unknown time ago, the offline address book stopped updating. When trying to download manually from Outlook using Tools->Send/Recieve->Download Address book, I get a pop-up that says:
"Connecting to Microsoft Exchange"
Then about 15 seconds later, a box pops up with:
"An error occurred while opening the Microsoft Exchange offline address book files. See your administrator."
I click OK to that, and then get:
"Microsoft Office Outlook cannot download your offline address book.
I found that some ADSI edits were necessary because the address list wasn't being generated properly, so I followed http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd535387%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx and now I can update the list using Exchange command line and the update
is successful. Also, the event log is clean from errors when I try to update the address list.
So from everything I can tell, the OAB itself is fine, but clients can't download it, and I don't know what's going on in the background with Outlook to see what it's choking on.
Your help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Brian

Hi
How is the OAB published?
If it's web-based, check so the files are being updatedJonas Andersson MCTS: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010 | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010 | MCSE/MCSA Blog:

From the powershell do a get-oabvirtualdirectory | fl and list the results for me here. Also, check the distribution method under organization configuration->mailbox->offline address book tab. Right click on the OAB and goto properties. Is
it public folder only or web based as well?

So it's not in public folder, only web based. We are an office 2007 place here. I hope someone can help me with this! Pulling what is left of my hair out.

I'm working the same issue. One suggestion is to grant Authenticated Users read-only access to the program files OAB folder under Exchange. I'm testing this now. Will propose an answer if I come across one. Any luck on your end?
