Hi

A few weeks ago my Outlook would not maximize. I tried a lot of things but no succes. I reinstalled the PC (Dell Latitude 13), Win 7 and Office 2010.

Now suddently I can not maximize Outlook again. The program is running. I can right click the taskbar icon and choose "New E-mail message" and send a mail. I can click the systray baloon when receiving a mail and open the mail.

But the main program window will not open.

I can start outlook in safemode (outlook /safe). I have removed all add ins, but it doesn't do any difference.

Any good ideas? Before I have to live with a permanent /safe swith on my shortcut :-)

Same thing exactly happened to me yesterday!!

I also reinstalled Office2010 and repaired my data files, but it did not change anything.

Check if it is set to run minimized:

 

1.    Click Start > All Program Files > Microsoft Office

2.    Locate Microsoft Outlook, right click it and choose Properties.

3.    In the open box, click Shortcut tab. After Run, check if minimized if selected. If it is selected, select maximized.

4.    Click OK to save the changes.

5.    Start Outlook from Start > All Program Files > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Outlook again.

How wierd. It was set to "Normal Window", but after I changed it to "Maximized" everything is back to normal.

No it isn't. Mine was set to run in 'Normal' window. I set it to run 'Maximized'. No change.

As Steen said, Outlook does run and it appears in the Taskbar. But when I click it to try and open the window, it doesn't come up. I can only see the Outlook window when I run it in safe mode.

(PS. I have disabled all add-ins too - no effect)

It actually did the job (the maximized thing)... I just had to set it on both the start menu and the toolbar shortcuts.

Strange that 'normal' doesn't necessarily mean normal these days!!

Normal should be normal. If you open maximised and then click on the restore button then it should go to a smaller size but instead mine minimises!

I did this which is pretty muhc the same. Open task manager and under Applications find Outlook and then right click on it and select maximise.

Now if you try and restore (button between minimise and close) it minimises instead and you cannot open again unless you use the methods above. Now if you minimise instead you can maximise. Therefore I think Outlook thinks that the normal window state for it is minimised.

I would say that this may have something to do with possibly closing down windows in certain instances with a minimised window where the op system then alters the restore state of Outlook to be minimised. This means that uinless you have it set to maximised when opening it will be oin a normal windows state thinking that it is minimised.

How does this affect not being able to open it? The reason I think is that when you click the task bar icon the system only tries to always restore Outlook to its "restore" state which is now always minimised!

So from here as long as you start it as maxmised and only use the miniomize and never restore you will be OK. If you restore however you are back to square one!

Sounds like the issue I just experienced where Outlook opened on screen but appears minimized (even though in "Restored" state) due to window being on screen but at zero width and zero height--see this thread for a workaround (#2 in first post) that will allow you to use the window in normal as well as maximized states again.

Sally, this did allow me to open the window, however if I grab in the top bar to move or touch the restore down button, it immediately resorts to minimized state and can not be opened against without running task manager and setting to maximum, or shutting the application and opening again with the settings you suggested.  I works enough to keep me running but clearly not normal operations...I cant move  or resize outlook.
